Today I was fishing a CR for the first time and everytime when my line was about 3/4 out from a full cast I would feel this jerk like the line was almost doubled up in the reel or something. This happened every time at what seemed like the same point during cast. Every time it happened I would get a birds nest that would run itself out by the end of the cast.

Any ideas? I let out a lot of line and reeled back in with out slack and it still was doing it. Maybe it was just the egg sinker heading down during cast that did it? I should try another lure tomorrow and see if it's still happening.

Would have anything to do with the brakes?

The centrifugal system helps prevent backlashing at the beginning of the cast. If you're backlashing at the end of a cast then play around with the cast control knob located below the handle.
Another question: Did you tie two lines together?

My thoughts also.

You might check the line for irregularities. I had the same problem (might not be the case with yours) as your describing after I spooled up some PLINE CX, the one in the silver box. Some how the line would either force itself into the spool or something. First thing I thought was the line was spooled loose or got hung up and pulled to hard. Turned out it was the line, respooled and didn't happen again. My thoughts

How many brakes do you have on, and what weight sinker?

I would suggest at least 4 brakes on with anything over a half ounce, then back off your spool tension knob to compensate for reduced distance.

Alot of people think using more brakes is a bad thing. Not always the case. Hope this helps.

I have also seen the wrong type rod cause this as well. Is your rod rated to throw the weight you are throwing?

Dan

Watch the CR while in flight.

Depending on how much weight(bullet or egg) you use and the combination of the weight and wind resistance of the bait, the lead can move up the line. When the reel starts slowing down it pushes the lead weight back towards the swivel and when it meets the swivel it gives a little thud.

Try this. Put a bobber stopper one inch above the CR weight. That will keep it from moving up the line during the cast and the thud will go away.
