Mineral Wells State Park, Purtis Creek State Park, Fairfield State Park.
You may want to call ahead of time. Last I heard, they were using the state park to house refugees. Some of them had no vacancies. You'll want to confirm it's back to business as usual.

1. Mineral Wells (sometimes hard to get in) 2. Possum Kingdom 3. Ray Roberts (both Isle du Bois and Johnson Branch)
Want to try Purtis, heard it was beautiful.

Nothing wrong with the State Park at your back door and if you forget something it's a short drive back home to pick it up and return!

Here's the ones we stay it in order of usage:
Tawakoni State Park - will be there this weekend. One of the newest State Parks. Closest one to you other than Joe Pool. Ok swimming area. Some sites with water access. (may not be able to pull a boat up to a camp site now since lake is 6 ft low) One of the best launch ramps. Nothing spectacular about this park - just quick and easy to get too and I like the lake. Bob Sandlin - Stayed there several times. Usually see several deer in the park. I mainly go to this one for the lake. Kids really like the swimming area. Good hiking trails. Nice fishing pier if you don't have a boat. Good launch ramp.
Bonham - My wife takes girl & boy scouts there every year and loves it. I've never been. Small lake. Wife likes to kayak on this lake. My boys caught several bass to 3 pounds there last weekend. Good playground for kids. I'm told you can put any boat on the lake but can't use the main engine.
Cooper - 2 parks North (Doctors) and South (south Sulpher) we have stayed in both. We liked the south one better. Good fishing pier. Good playground. Don't remember about the boat ramp on this one - sorry. Kids keep asking to go back to this one but it's not my favorite lake so we go other places.
We only tent camp all of these have sites that are good for that.
Also - Tyler State Park - Nice pretty rolling hills. Good if you like to bike or hike. Small 60 acre appox lake. One we havn't tried yet but plan too soon. We have driven through it and like what we see. We will probably stay there in the next few months. Has rental of paddle boats and canoes if that is still open for the season.
Hope this helps.

I don't tent camp anymore since I bought a travel trailer but here's my favorites.
Tyler State park Cooper state park Bob Sandlin State park Beavers Bend in OK
If you want to go out a little farther my favorite is Atlanta State park. Galveston is always a cool trip as well.
For me and the wife we sometimes go to a small county park close to Hawkins,Tx. I think it is called Wood County RV park. Nice place.

we have land in lone oak on lake twakonie or however you spell it, the state park in nice but there is a public hunting type 2 area north of it near the sabine river thats loaded with fish, and ducks etc. there is nothing better in my opinion than getting up early when the birds fly in and then spending the rest of the day fishing the flooded woods. you need a boat but hunting from the boat is just as fun as fishing from it. cought huge cats and limits of smaller ones in this area, always, bass are great too.

You can use motor at idle speed. the lake is small enough that it's not needed. But as you leave the ramp there is a sandbar to the left just past the swim area.

Lake Georgetown is about 3 hours from DFW. Has good tent and trailer camping at Jim Hogg Park and Cedar Breaks. If your timing is good, there are spots at Hogg where you can beach your boat right beside the campsite.
Water's a little low lately though.

I would also have to Beavers Bend, OK
The park/lake/and streams make it amazing. Plus with the trees changing right now it is very pretty! Not to mention it's the closests thing to Mountains you can get within a 3 hour drive of DFW.
Have a great time whever you go!
PS I try to go to Broken Bow at least 3-4 times a year
