A while back I found a couple of reels in my grandparents old garage.

One is an Abu (sweden) Ambassador 5000D and the other is a Daiwa Procaster PL-100.

Both reels appear to be in great working condition except for one thing. When I pull drag on both of them the handles turn backwards as the drag comes out. Which would mean that if i was to let a fish take drag i would have to take my hand off the handle and let it spin?

I disassembled the Abu and reassembled, cant see anything wrong, although I dont really know what I am looking for.

Can anyone tell me if these reels are designed that way? If not is it fixable and is either reel worth paying to have fixed?

Thanks!

look for a little brass "dog." This piece of metal is bent double with a small gap in it to fit around a little gear. This piece will stop the reel from spinning backwards. I do not know how to explain this.

The 5000d was a direct drive reel. The drag only works when the handle was released allowing it to turn in the opposite direction as when cranking. It is still ajustable, but if you grad hold of the handle,no line will be released. These are somewhat rare and have some collector value if in good condition, The Daiwa needs repair. Hope this helps.

I'd keep 'em both. Those little Daiwas had problems with the anti-reverse piece, but other than that they are a solid little reel worth using IMO. With proper adjustment, they'll throw as well as anything.

No fish is too good for the grease.
