Hey guys. Lights & blinkers work fine but brake lights do not. Since it is both sides makes me believe it is not my bulbs. It seems like it may be my light kit on the truck. I've already checked all the connections & everything is fine. Should I be able to take a meter to each wire on the truck side connector to see if I am getting a voltage reading while stepping on the brake to determine? Thanks for your help.

Yes you should find voltage when stepping on the brakes.. Also, you might check your fuse panel in the truck I have found that in my ford there are fuses for most everything LOL.

Thanks guys, I forgot to mention brake lights work fine on the truck. Still a possible fuse? Might have to check them after work. Would be nice if that's it! smile

You didn't say what brand truck. If it's a Ford there are 3 fuse boxes. Check your O.M. will tell you which fuse it is.

Are the brake lights and blinkers on the same wire on the truck? On most American made they are but on imports they are not. I am guessing on a Dodge it is one wire to each side. If so, if your blinkers work then your brake lights should also. The only way that I can imagine one of the 2 not working is if you have the import style. In that case your problem is definitely the truck.

if the blinkers are amber on the truck you need a tail light convertor from import to domestic,it will have a wire for brake lamps ,most of the time this wire is red. should be able to get the convertor at o'rileys, auto zone ect. even if you already have 1 on the truck check it they are bad about going out, even though they are built with the finest ten cent an hour child labor !(china)not a bad idea to have an extra in the truck, did i mention they're bad about going out !

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Trlrman,
Would the tail light converter be part of the original wiring harness kit that I purchased from Autozone? What does the converter look like? My trailer lights have been working fine for 2 years so I must have one on there. I was going to check fuses first & then troubleshoot the harness to see if I get a voltage reading when stepping on the brake.

I had that same problem when I installed lights on my trailer. One of the grounds weren't connected so it was blowing the fuse for just the one set of lights. The others worked fine. Mine was a blazer, but it had about three different fuses for just the tow lights. They were marked something like TWBRK TWTAIL TWBCK. But I had to basically pull every fuse to figure out which one it was, because of coarse, it was the last one I pulled.

Question if you had found it on the second fuse you pulled would it have been the last one you tried??

I didn't understand all of the abbreviations, and I'd never been in there before that. So I just started pulling every fuse until I found one that was blown (the last one I pulled). That's when I realized each set of lights had their own fuse.

On the Fords there are several fuses that can be the problem (ie "trailer or towing package"-but don't know about the Dodge

If you your blinkers and brake lights are not separate then you will not need the converter. The converter is needed because you are going from 4 wires on the truck to 2 on the trailer.
