I have spoken to a couple of you about this TPWD is wanting to remove grass carp from Lake Jacksonville they are unaware they can be harvested on rod and reel, I have been talking to one of the regional biologist about this and he is really excited about the prospect of being able to remove them this way they had there bow fishing tourney and only got 10 fish...based on my fishing out there we should be able to get 10 per angler easy.....they want to reserve the park for us...the WHOLE park and come out and watch and learn, see rigs, methods, baits ect ect...our goal as funny as it sounds will be to remove as many grassers as possible....I am even toying with the idea of a long-line with hair rigs...this is a great chance for us to help the TPWD with a problem and along the way educate them on common carp and carp angling...want to get this together the first part of sept. who will help me??

In.

Though I'd vote for October/November, if not later. Cooler weather makes for a much nicer weekend, and the vast majority of Grassers I've caught or seen caught seem to come in the cooler months.

offtopic Can I ask why they are removing them? Guessing they are eating all the foliage for the little fry / baitfish causing the game fish, i.e. bass to consume to much food and then not having enough in the long run? Correct me if I'm wrong.

bump for helping TPWD.

Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.

Cause they're grassers. White Amur, NOT Common Carp. Someone decided to stock them, and as usual, stocked too many, is my understanding.

Much as we tend to try and distance ourselves from White Amur/Grassers and point out they are not common carp, we should do our part to help remove them.

Plus it's an excuse to hang out and work directly with TPWD again, that's always fun. And also, an excuse to fish Jacksonville for a weekend!

I assume it's a whole weekend, Zach?

and they have destroyed the common carp fishery, this is a VERY good chance for us to show our support for TPWD and pay back the love we have gotten from them...

Sort of a distant date/venue for me, however - I'd certainly like to do it. Please put me down as a definite maybe!!
I'm intrigued as to how JUST the Amur will be targeted? Seems there might be commons also caught?

Thats in my neck of the woods, I may have to mak an apearance. I could even pick up some....well you guys know my other hobby. Anyway, depending on how things go, I could possible be interested in helping pre-bait since that is about a 45 minute drive from me, someone else may be closer though. My wife went to college there in Jacksonville, seen that lake a few times. The hydrilla was aweful there a few years ago.

To the person asking why grassers need to go: Your logic is flawed, hydrilla actually helps the green trash fish fishery. Its more a problem of choked out swimming areas, damaged boats, useless boat docks, and pointless bankfishing that the grassers were put in for. When the hydrilla dies back they go after native plants and really mess things up.

If it is on a weekend, I am in. I'd also like to schmooze with some TPWD folks who may have an interest in my natural resources degree. Fishing and networking = efficient smile

If it is on a weekend and I can work out getting out there I am game.

I tend to over think fishing. Please help me.
When I am over complicating something please kick me in the face. Hard.

All the Amur that I have caught, and seen caught, have so far come on the same baits and same tactics used for commons and for buffalo. Lots of them on maize, lots of them on drilled range cubes, etc.

I'm actually hoping some commons and some buffalo ARE caught! Be fun to show them off to TPWD if they're really big, show them how our alarms sound on a crazy "toner" run, etc.

It's simple, though. Amur don't go back in the water, Commons and Buffalo do go back in the water lol.

how will the fish be disposed of? i guess that is my only major question....would not mind trying to get the wifey out there and let her have a run at those....im not educated at all as how to target carp period....would like to get that notch in her belt though...
