Anyone know a place that sells Shad Trawls? I thought Bass Pro or Cabelas did at one time, but they no longer do.
Thanks!

These were the only ones I saw last time I looked around. http://www.boatcycle.com/netting.htm Has anyone else used one of these?

I had a shad trawl about 10 years ago. I never caught anything with it. You might have better luck. I would suggest a 7' cast net .

Shad trawls are not very effective for collecting bait. Hard to trawal effectively with a recreational boat. You might also check the regs, there may be restrictions on there use.

Thanks Chrysops. There are regulations on these, to where they cannot be very big for freshwater. I know a few areas on Whitney/Tawakoni that hold a lot of shad so I thought I would give those a try w the trawl as well.

Following is the most effective manner I have successfully used a Trawl:
Find the largest span of a net that you can find. Having used crawfish nets in the canals for mud bugs gave me the idea. Access to a dock of some kind helps also.
Attach(bolt) a horizontal beam to a well-braced, established verticle beam. Attach a heavy duty pully to the underside of the horizontal beam towards the end over the water. Thread a rope thru it and attach it to your net. Use, if necessary, a few strips of 2"x2" molding to create an "X" to assure the net doesn't collapse. Tie, in the center of the net your choice of attractant. We used bread in a stocking. Also throw a bit on the surface to have them come up once they are in the area. Attach the drop rope from the pully to the combined 4 corner rope attachment device and drop the net down to desired depth. We used a portable depth/fish finder at night to determine the depth of cruising shad. A huge night light used as an attractant helps an awful lot too. Once the shad are in the area, you simply grab the rope and pull swiftly to capture your bait in the net. Gaff the net to the dock and scoop or do as we did also. We used a floating bait bag, which also contained chum, and used an extender net to scoop out of the Trawl and into the bag as to not disturb, too much, the surrounding waters. Good luck!
