Check out the sea weed situation on the Gulf Coast prior to coming. It is SO thick and SO smelly that you cannot get near the gulf. Dunno how far up and down coast it goes, it is Deal Breaker!

Thanks and Gig'em, Mark Fairchild

Only mention I found was:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/texas/87959-whats-up-all-seaweed-coast.html

They leave the impression that some seaweed is normal and it will all go back off shore by July...??

Thanks.

At the jetties the stench of rotting seed weed is SO bad that you retch. Had paths cleared on some of the public beaches, this is a plague on the gulf side.

We fished the PA jetties Tuesday and on the beach side the grass was stacked up against the jetties. Monday tried to fish the PINS, south of Bob Hall to the sticks-grass everwhere and PA beaches- grass, grass and grass.
If you go to the PINS driving is very, very poor and you need 4x4 as soon as you hit the sand.

Ah, the weed. That lovely yearly invasion. It's nice because it brings in a lot of baitfish... but it sure can be a pain. There are a few tricks to dealing with it, but the best thing to do is wait til it subsides. Of course, this wannabe storm we have in the Gulf will be sure to bring plenty with it.

Fishing a weedline in the surf along one of the jetties I saw a crazy sight; a small tripletail, suspended under a weed clump. Never know what presents the weed will bring in...

Was at south padre last week and there was an occasional wave of seaweed (the small brown variety) that would ash up, but the beach authority runs a tractor through in the AM and scrapes it up in the hotel district. But it wasn't bad at all.

The surf had small breaks, the water was stained, and tourists were EVERYWHERE.

Today... today the weed came in in flotillas. It was Everywhere, man. The best you could do was cast to pockets, bass-in-the-slop style, and pray that if you hooked something that you could drag it out before it got too tangled. The water looked decent, but the sargassum clearly outweighed the advantage.

Just another reason I prefer to come down in August. But NOOOO, the wife wanted to do a July trip.

I hope she enjoys her days on the beach while I'm kayaking the back bays.

I just got back and I wouldn't go down there for another few weeks. Two days of hard fishing left us with one piggy and one skipjack. We talked to ALOT of folks fishing and NO ONE was catching anything. The water is super high still and has got the tides all out of whack.

Yeah, it's definitely not a good time to come visit. Even I am not fishing right now.

So is this an annual deal? What causes it? Also, why is the water "high"?

I yearn to learn about this salty stuff.
