Central Texas kayak/river fisherman here. Only fished the surf a few times with a buddy who knew what he was doing. To say I'm not very experienced in the surf would be overstating my experience, so I'm looking for any ideas.

Family rented a place at Bermuda Beach. Mainly for hanging out/playing with the kiddos in the sand and waves, but I thought I'd hit the surf early and late to see if I could catch a fish. Knew the storm probably hosed me.

Went out early this am and late this evening throwing a Gulp shrimp on a jig head. Went out to the first (?) sandbar and casted out most of the time. Got flat pounded by the waves. Water was brown. Didn't get so much as a single hit.

Anybody got any ideas? Am I likely just hosed because of the chop and the brown water? Or am I likely missing something?

Yeah, wait for the waves to drop. Get out of the kayak, which you are floating up and down, ground your feet and fish. I like kayaks too, but not in the beach.

Thanks, man. Is there any way to read/guess when the waves will drop enough to make it reasonably fishable?

Thanks for the advice, fellas.

The surf is calmer and the water clearer today (not crystal clear, but much better).

Slept in too much and still caught a couple 15-16 inch specs and a 21 incher in the surf this morning. Had a blast. Will hit it again later tonight and in the am, hopefully earlier this time.
