As I explained in another post, my annual spring trip to Somerville was cancelled last weekend. Instead, my wife told me that we'd have to reschedule for mid-May.
I've never fished the lake that late in the spring, and was wondering whether or that a month from now is too late to effectively target whites and hybrids. I know they're active and can be found up shallow this time of year. But what type of pattern can I expect May 15-16?
Thanks for your response.

Actually I'm marking and was catching fish (until this past weekend) in deeper water. They can be found shallow this time of year but they are starting into their summer patterns which means points and humps in deep water. They'll pretty much be in deep water until the fall. They'll start schooling bigtime with birds working very soon if not already. We just need this wind to die down!!!!! May is an excellent time to go!

unclefish,
When you refer to deep water on Somerville, what is typically considered deep water on that lake? Twenty feet? Thirty or 40? I'm just trying to get an idea, since 30 may be deep on some lakes while on others it isn't necessarily so.
I suppose I need to invest in a Top Spot map of Somerville, too.
Thanks...

SeanH,anywhere from 20 to 28-30 ft.would be deep water in somereville. The water near the dam is probably the deepest part of the lake.A map would help alot towards learning the underwater structure of the lake, such as humps,drop-offs, main lake points, and submerged roadbeds to name a few, likely places where whitebass are attracted too.....

38 feet is about the deepest water you'll find on Somerville. When I say deep I'm talking from 10 to 20 feet. Points, humps, roadbeds are the spots to key on. They should be schooling on top in May around these areas.

Ok these questions may be dumb, but that is what this forum is for. Number 1, have any of yall fished the roadbeds on lake Somerville (between rocky and yegua park; by the dam; others on main lake)?? I see them on the map, but I don't know what to look for on my graph; would it be a 3 ft rise or 8ft??? Also, it is kind of hard because I don't have gps and i dont know how to read the thing for fish because it is so old, but it does have depth. Number 2, why do I always see tons of boats just out from the small island out from rocky creek?? thanks and please excuse my ignorance

You generally have to have at least a decent graph to find the road beds if you don't have a GPS. It's usually a pretty subtle rise from road to the roadside ditches -sometimes a couple of feet - sometimes a little more. Those boats are fishing the humps out from Rocky Creek. It can be good but, it gets awfully crowded on the weekends. There are similar spots that are not as well known. A Top Spot map is a good investment, but there are some spots that don't show up on that map (thank goodness ).

Thanks for the info on the roadbeds.....I do have a top spot, and I see some small humps, but mainly intersecting creek/riverbeds with some good dropoffs. Must be a good spot since everyone fishes it. In my posts on rocky creek i was refering to the so called submerged tire reef out closer to the end of the peninsula of Rocky Creek.

Is there a good place to rent cabins on the lake with AC? I've heard some guy on KILT with Wayne Vinton who give reports on Somerville. I think it's Lake Somerville Marina. Anybody ever stayed there? Are they nice & clean?

I stayed in the Lake Somerville Marina cabins last month..Its the bare basics amenities.Shower, small frige on counter, sink and 2-full size beds, a/c.Its a modest rental...I probably wouldn't rent it again just cause my wife didn't like it. Just FYI..theirs no TV,computer ports, coffee pot, cable/satellite,bring you drinking water..These are just things that could make-up the time if fish aren't biting.. I did notice one of the cabins did have a Satellite dish. You may want to ask about it. The rental was $60.00 per night in believe... The marina entrance gate close at 10pm.So if you venture in to brenham or fish past 10pm you will have to park you vehicle at the gate & walk in to your cabin(aprox.150yards).The marina has no boat ramp of it own but you can launch off at overlook park...Hope this helps ya....
