I've heard good things about fishing roadbeds, but I've never been able to find any to fish. I have a navionics chip that supposedly will put me right on them, but when I look at my sonar, I can't see any change from the surrounding lake bottom when I drive over where the road is supposed to be. I'm looking for a change in hardness and/or a slight elevation change. Either I'm not good enough at reading my graph, or I'm doing it wrong. How can I know I'm on these roads? Thanks!

Look for elevation changes. Picture that your looking at and old country road, with a ditch on both sides, thats what it will look like. Some have good elevations, and some dont. The fish will normally be holding on the top corners or right in the middle. Or around bait. The best way to graph the is by driving back and forth over the road bed, not up and down it.
Hope this helps some.

I've found that the Navionics marked roadbeds aren't entirely accurate. It will put you close, but not right on it.
Once you find them, I like to fish them where there is timber along the side or where it crosses a creek. Bends in the roadbed can also be really good.

Remember, the older the lake the more likely the roadbed has silted over so they may be harder to find.

+1...for me,a roadbed fishes alot like a pond dam, they wont be on 80% of it...theres a few sweet spots, like the underwater bridge where the channel runds into it(which sometimes is little more that just a depression next to it)...brushpiles on the edges of them, and Ive done very well on the corners where the start to slope up towards land(even in mid summer)...hope this helps.

One of the easiest ways to find a roadbed is to track it from the shore. Navionics generally puts you close, so scan the shoreline until you find where the road enters the lake and graph it by zig zagging.
If you still have trouble finding roadbeds, then buy a side-imaging unit.

I have also had good luck where two roads meet or at the bottom of a hill on a road bed.

Road beds are great if they have one or two things going on besides an elevation change: cover like brush, grass or timber, bridges and creeks running through as mentioned above, but my number one thing to determine if I will sit on a road bed is bait.
no bait ....no fish.

Thanks for the tips. It sounds like I'm looking correctly, but just no good at it!

Do you have a particular lake in mind where you were looking? I picked up a map from wally world that seems to have many underwater features marked well. It has a GPS overlay so you could compare to see if you were right on it and not reading the graph right. Of course there is the obvious, do you see where the road ended at the land and can imagine where it went from there to the other side within reason?
