i currently have a 1985 90hp mercury runs like a top, no issues what so ever ! I just bought another boat with a 1981 150hp mercury ! it hasn't been run in a few years ! fuel pump was out and wouldn't allow fuel up the carbs. I rebuilt the pump and got it to start up and run motor pisses water like it suppose to. So it runs !! I know it has some missing parts or part that need to be replaced. fist of all the prop is trashed, it needs the stator replaced, $191 for that, also a difuser the black plastic piece that bolt to the front of the carbs,$87, and the piece on the front of the cowling that kinda clamps on to keep water out, not prices yet. So im looking at close to $500 to get this motor right and i know nothing about the lower unit, but was told it had the oil changed as well as the water pump. it did run when he took it out. My question is would you keep the 150hp or just trade the 90 hp onto the new boat and be done ? i just don't know anything about the 150hp motor ?

if i decide to keep the 150 my current boat with the 90 will be sold as a package. If i use the 90 on the new boat i'd sell my old boat and the 150 seperate ! old boat wouldn't be able to handle the 150 !

It would depend on how long it's been since the 90 has been rebuilt. The inline 6 mercurys are very expensive to repair if it drops a piston. So I would most likely keep the 150HP V6 and get rid of the inline before it needs rebuilt. I have had a couple of both and the V6 is a definate advantage.

the 90 is origional never had any problems what so ever ! i bought it from the origional owner and it sat in a garage more than it was ever run ! i've been runnin it for about 4 years ! the 150 sat for a few years in the water and looks like it has salt water corrosion on the lower case even though it has never been out of a private ski lake ! my boat has no jack plate and this newer bass boat has a 6" jack plate. the 150 runs pretty good, i have 2 little adjustment parts on order to see if it runs even better than being tied with string ! LOL

i loved those inline engines , as far as rebuilding i dont remember them costing more , they were blind bores so as long as the block was good and you didnt run the boring bar through the head they were a snap to rebuild, if the one boat has a 150 id stay with that goiung to a 90 would probably be a let down

i don't know what it would run like with a 150. the 90 was on a 16' phantom fish ans ski and it would run 45mph trimmed out. the boat i have it on now will only run 38mph. i've never ran a 150 to know ! also i know prop pitch makes a huge difference, from boat weight, jack plate, and variables like that.

I would put a little money in the 150 and try to keep it on the boat. Putting a 90 on a boat that came with a 150 would put to much strain on the 90 and you would never be satisfied with it. Sounds like you have a good start on the 150 and are almost finished with it already just put the other 500 in it and after you have it all fixed and running then sale the boat with the 90. Also you can get more for the boat with a working motor (even an old one) than without a motor. Good Luck.

i think i've decided to clean off the stuff i need off my old boat and switch it over to the new boat like my trolling motor, depth finder, kinda stuff, and dump the extra cash into the 150 and hopefully it will be as dependable as my boat with the 90. i'm just gonna take the gamble and sell my older boat to fund the newer one !
