What are some signs that you have low compression or no compression at all

Hard to start, poor idle, excesive carbon, and most notably a low reading on a pressure guage.

Revs up in neutral but wont stay running in gear! and loss of hole shot.

What matt said, with "low reading on a pressure gauge" being the only way I know of to rule it out for sure.
If your motor overheated until it seized, you probably lost some compression.
Or if your spark plugs have water on 'em, or look like they just been steam cleaned because of a blown head gasket.
Or if your spark plugs have specs of aluminum from melting pistons.
