[ I carry a knife with me, so cutting it isn't an issue, although getting the cut as close to the knot as I would like, is. [/quote]
use the palomar knot , leave about 1/4 inch tag..too close will come loose as you are experiencing

Hey Brother, Try tying a double palomar knot. This will help to prevent all line slipping. Most braided lines have a slight wax coding to help prevent fading. The double palomar knot will help. Especially with frogs and punchin'. Also, try setting to hook on a tight line. If you have slack in your line you might snap or pop the line at the hook. Let me know if this works for you.

Sounds like you are cutting the tag line too close!!! go to 30 and leave a little tag.

What kind of hook? It's probably slipped out of the gap in the hook eye.
I use 10# - 65# power pro and never have any issues using a normal palomar knot.
The only problem is if the hook has a gap at the eye. You might try a Gamakatsu Superline hook.

I use 70# Diawa Samurai and havent had any issues. Its easily the best braid ive ever used and I'm not affiliated with Diawa in any way. I almost felt bad spooling their line on my shimano reels. LOL

i agree with the general consensus here.. f you're giving them the hookset from hell with 15# braid, that's the first mistake.. braid has almost no give.. you definitely have to have the right rod if you insist on using light braid.. and you should have a heck of a drag system. In my case, when i'm throwing braid.. it's business time. I don't throw anything less than 50, because when i'm using braid i'm using it for a reason. If you have to use 15, use flouro or even big game. But that's just me - to each his own. and 'Barn' might be right, I see a lot of the smaller braids wiggling there way into the gap in the hook eye

First, I've been leaving 1/4 inch tag end. When I said I was having trouble getting the tag I wanted with a knife, I meant I couldn't get my usual 1/8 inch.
I *am* giving them the "hookset from hell" with 15# braid. Maybe the braid is breaking because of the lack of give?
I don't think the line is slipping thru the hook eye, because I am careful to move it away from it and all the force would be in the opposite direction.
Sounds like I could go to 30+ braid, tie a different knot, and use this L&L stuff, and solve my problem, but I am thinking it isn't worth it to me. I'm just gonna go back to my tried and true mono.

Are you sure its the knot, your using small braid, and just said your giving the hookset from hell, Im I have had mine beak from shock of a heavy hookset. No stretch in the line is a lot of shock to the line, once i toned down my hookset on lighter braid all went well

Years of R&D taught me this and I'll give you the results. 1) Go on line and get the directions to tie what the saltwater people use called a Paragum knot used to connect mono to braid for shock tippet. 2) For best no slip results tested at Falcon, Choke & Amistad apply this formula. 30lb Braid - 12 - 15lb mono leader 50lb Braid - 17 - 20lb mono leader 65lb Braid - 20 - 25lb mono leader
In the field knots trim as close as possible and it will go through the eyes easily. If you have time I use a drop of super glue, let stand for a couple of seconds then roll it in your between your fingers and that will make it go through the eyes even easier.
In 6 years I've never broken this knot, problem is don't snag cause it won't break you'll pull the boat or snap your rod.
Hope this helps.

are you using a weight? Are you pegging it? The weight pounding on that palomar knot will cause it to break if it is not pegged. I have never had a prob. with braid and palomar knots. I use 50-65 lb power pro.

I went to a flouro leader for the stealth factor, minimal stretch, direct hook setting power and feel.
As far as weight goes, I pitch 3/32 6/0 weighted wacky hooks with this set up so as light as that is it stills goes through the eyes freely.
I use a Carolina Keeper when I C-rig so the weight never sees the knot and Texas rigs are pegged
One other tip I forgot to mention, I only use one rod length of leader, this keeps the knot from going down into the spool.
The system sounds like a hassle but it's not really, once you get it down you can be rigged in the field in less than 2 mins.
The best part of this, if you're fishing structure shallower than the length of your leader the braid will tend to stay on top of the water, watch your line and forget about feeling the bite, you'll see the braid twitch or go straight before you feel the bite almost acts like a strike indicator. You'll get the jump on the bite because the line will tell you what's happening.

Normally with mono type lines you cut a tag end of about 1/16". Leave about a 1/4" tag end. You can also use super glue. I have done all of the above. But when I am in a tournament and in a hurry, I use the 1/4" tag end method. Pull down tight.

Yeah, that is one thing I liked about braid, was the floating-on-top giving me a jumpstart on knowing something was going on with the bait.
Seriously, tho, I only went to braid because I broke off a couple of times on a 3 1/2 pounder (I hooked this idiot up 3 times in 1 week at the same spot) with the mono. I upgraded to 15 pound mono and landed him, but I didn't like the feel of the 15 pound mono. I am just going to go back to the 10 pound mono and be sure to change out my line more often.
