On my sons 2001 Jeep Grand Cheroke the serpentine belt keeps breaking. Why and what can I do to figure out why it broke again even after installing a new one? It lasted a week and broke again after the one that was already on it when we bought it. Thanks!!

slider look at the tensioner and idler pulley alignment with the belt installed, also if this is the 4.0 L check the harmonic balancer for being in proper alignment.

Thanks Stan. It has the 4.7. Forgive me for not knowing, but what is the harmonic balancer?

Look at the broken belt. If it's an alignment problem, there will be wear on one edge of the belt only. If it's a clean break with no signs of belt wear, you have a bearing freezing up. Hope this helps.
