I was on Braunig lake this evening and got checked by the game wardens. I wasn't worried about anything because I really try to stay on top of the rules. But suprise, suprise, when he got to the life vests I had 3 on board and only my wife and I. He asked to see them and I produced them, 1 regular nice one and the 2 that inflate themselves. He informed me that the inflateable ones are only legal as long as you have them on while on the water. This I did not know. I read the full instructions with them and a book put out by the parks and wildlife and on the different grades and styles of vest. No where did I see any reference to haveing to have them on at all times. I assume he could have given me a ticket for at least one. We put them on. Lesson learned. They were nice guys. If you use them, wear them or have enough of the other type to offset not wearing them.

That is something I didn't know either, especially since I just swapped out to those. Guess I will be stashing the standard ones back into the boat again. Thanks for the info!

That's why I keep 5 of the standard old Orange PFD's in the boat. I also keep 6 of the inflatables. The 5 orange are if somebody is in trouble and I can throw them a PFD to buy time in loading them on my boat.

ialways put a vest on since i swin as good as an anchor! I had one TPW pull up on me on my first day out on the boat i got. I was w my dad and my daughter. He immediately looked over at my daughter to do a visual on the vest since she is 8yrs old. He also asked to see that one was available for each person on the boat. I had just bought that 4-pack of vests at academy so that got a check mark. Then he checked my fishin license, said thank you and went on to fry bigger fish. I hear some are polite and others that are vicious!

I've never had the feesh gestapo be anything but professionals. They are just guys doing a job. I'm sure if you make an @ss out of yourself they have no problem returning the favor. I'm also sure that they have good days and bad days like everybody else. I just try not to attract their attention to begin w/. I'd rather be fishing than playing w/ the po-po.

Considering the other people they deal with are drunk lake lice and the occasional drowning victim, I think they have a really tough job. I have always had very positive encounters with game wardens. They love to see people obeying the law.

Ive had it go both ways, one was really nice, and one tried to find me doing something wrong and walked away embarassed that he couldn't. The later one pissed me off pretty good. I was bank fishing and on my way out, 5 rods in one hand and tackle box+bucket in other, loaded down going up hill. I was fishing on a river and walking up a path with blind turn, he stomps out in front of me from blind spot, both arms out like he is about to draw his piece on me and hollars state game warden! like I was going to do something with a fist full of rods and a tackle box. Next he made me set them down in the mud, and then checked my license. When I had a license he started to go, and almost forgot to ask if I had any fish, which it was plain to see I didn't. After that he quickly walked away, didn't even say have a good evening or anything like that and left me to pick all my [censored] back up after making me dump it. He didn't look any older than me, im 24, figured it was just a youngster hoping for some action.

I had a warden check us out on the water yesterday at Gibbons Creek and he saw the inflatables in one of the front storage areas and did not say anything about having to wear it.

Was that the only vests you had or did you have some other types on board? According to state law you have to have Type V vests on for them to be considered regulation. Your warden may have just over looked it.

I was on the Pecos River and was stopped was wearing my life jacket had my throw cushion etc. My buddy was not wearing his and I had four of the orange approved life jackets in a Coast Guard bag since they were not readily accessable and not out I received a "warning" citation. My same buddy received a citation last year at Choke Canyon because his life jacket was faded in color due to sun bleaching it. They said it was unserviceable and issued a citation.

My wife's vest and my son's vest were right behind them along with a throw cushion and he noticed that right away and just reminded me that as long as we were anchored, my boy who is 8 did not have to wear it.

He then asked to se mine and I walked over to the bow and pulled out 4 more and he was happy. 2 were the inflatables and all the others are the mesh back foam buckle up kind.

Nice guy, I respect them tremendously.
