Good question, I don't see how that filters anything?

Pump pulls water to the one side of the divider (pump side), flows over the divider into the other side with the filter. Water goes through filter and flows out through small holes under filter. The small hole next to the pump out take regulates the flow so the water does not fill up the entire square bucket and overflow - bypassing the filter. I made a similar system and have kept shad alive for three days.

In the summertime with this heat, I just keep the pump going non-stop on my livewell and the shad are ok for about 3 hours. Any more fishing time than that & I just go catch more. Also be very sure not to overload your tank, whether its a livewell, circulating bucket or whatever. In cool weather, my livewell can handle a lot more shad than it can in this heat. On Tuesday, I stuck with about 20 baits in the well.

Tip - you don't have to use live shad for hybrids/stripers. I use big gizzard shad cut in half for alot of my fishing. The key is that they have to be fresh; frozen just never seems to work for me.

Question please. It's says to point the pump out take at the hole. Does that not just put most of the scales back in the tank? New at this my self. My tank has that kind of system but I didn't know where to point the pump. Thanks

I use shad for alot of my fishing too. I call it the "universal bait" I just put them on ice. I catch just as many off fresh dead shad as I do live ones. I know this may not always be the case but it does work for me when they die or I cant keep them alive.

I am going to invest in a bait tank. I might have better luck fishing with live shad if I ever had any.

about 1/2 the water is filtered ...the other 1/2 half splashes into the water and aerates it .... it will all get filtered eventually .... This homemade tank works like a charm. I am going to load it up this weekend and see how long they will last in the heat .... This cheapy tank is insulated! I also added a small tube to the water intake tube to feed pure oxygen into ....
It really keeps em lively ......
