i went out to practice casting with my brand new 5wt setup. when i was done i noticed i had tied a wind knot at the very end of my line right before the loop in the fly line. part of the line split at the knot. did it happen in my line because i didn't have a leader or anything on the end? is my line ruined? could i just snip the line behind the crack, then tie i double overhand loop knot to replace the loop?

here a big pics

Not ruined. Did the same thing the other day with my 8wt line. Was casting in the street shredded the last inch or so. Clip the line just behind the crack and tie in a perfection loop. It's my go to loop to loop connection. Never had it fail. line will be good as new.

probably can just add some uv knot sense to it and be fine. the majority of your line strength comes from the core line, as long as that isn't damaged you should be fine.

If you are going to practice, at least attach a leader to the end of your fly line. It doesnt have to be a good one, just a straight piece of crappy mono will work.

It shouldnt split like that just from a wind knot.
You might take it back and exchange it.
Like others have said, it isnt ruined though.

Everyone say it with me:
THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

Casting a fly line without a leader? Are you trying to cause a wormhole to open up in your back yard?

Just cut off the bad section, bend the line over to form a loop, and put a couple mono nail knots on the doubled over line. Put one where you want the loop to open and the other at the tag end. No bulk to keep it from going through the guides and it should not ever pull out.

You could go to a fly shop in the area and buy a package of braided mono loops. Don't use the shrink tubing that comes with them, put 2 nail knots with mono instead. One just before the fly line ends and the other just before the braid over the line ends.

FISH ON!!! ummmmm off

Just snip it off and fold about 1.5" back to make a new loop get your 120 denyer thread and wrap liberaly forming your new loop whip finish several times and cover the whole thing with head cement or sallys hard as nails instant loop that will slide right through the eyes

Or you could cut off the cracked section and nail-knot a 7-10" piece of amnesia to it, with a perfection loop tied in the end of the amnesia. Now you have a perfectly acceptable, permanent "leader butt" to which to attach the leader of your choice. Not any harder than putting a loop in the end of your fly line, really.

Just so we have a confusing amount of options, you could also PM Robin and get him to build you a double catch braided loop. I used to use a heavy piece of mono nail knotted and perfection looped like Jackmack detailed above, but I really like how the braided double catch loop works.

Inept, you know I love ya, buddy, but don't use those premade braided loops. They're only a single catch job and can come unraveled on you at the drop of a hat. I had one fail on my just trying to get it on the fly line. We both know it wouldn't happen at the hat dropping, but instead on a good fish.

That's why you shouldn't cast without a leader on the line. When you "crack the whip" in your back cast, or even in the forward false cast, you end up causing stuff like that. Easy fix though.

Well, you could keep it simple.....

1. Cut of the messed up part and tie on a new leader using a nail knot (fly fishers have been using nail knots to tie leader to flyline for, like, 300 years or something)

2. Go to this website http://www.orvis.com/orvis_assets/files/index.html and look at the nail knot tutorial. Practice it till it looks right. If it don't look like the picture when done, it ain't right. Once you get it, they work great and hold tight. Trim it good and it'll go through the guides no problem.
