I know exactly what you mean.

First, Location. That may be points, humps, creek channels, old pond dams, spawning flats, and depth.
Second, Structure. Im looking for the sweet spot within the spot. Drops, rocks, brush, grass, etc.
Third, Fish and bait. If the Fish are there then thats all I need. If not, then I move on. If the bait is there but no fish, then I move on but come back later to see if the fish have arrived for diner. They may come to a spot at different times of the day to feed.
Of course water temp plays a part as well as time of year, weather conditions, etc which I have taken into account prior to finding my location.

Structure is key. Then finding fish and bait on that structure and seeing how they are relating to it will determine if they can be caught or not.

structure... then i try to find how the fish are relating to it to determine how to attack it. suspended fish usually make me leave before making a cast...

I look at the bottom and what kind of structure is there and then worry about seeing the fish. Its gotta be the somewhere you would think they will want to be under those certain conditions. Whats cool with these new units is when you think you found a bassy spot you will pick some fish or bait balls up. Now, getting them to eat is more up to them. anyways, hope this helps. also, when idling around watching the screen I always stop for rock piles, humps, or any pot holes, and of course GRASS which shows up great with down imaging.

When you're scanning what do you usually put your distance out to the sides at? Are you actually seeing fish when using side scan or are you finding a good structure spot and then either reducing your side scan distance or using downscan to pick up the fish and how they are oriented. I know when I'm looking for structure areas I usually have it set to 100 ft. At that distance it's hard for me to pick up individual fish. I was thinking that once I find a structure area, go back by it with my side scan reduced to around 40 or 50 ft to get more detail. Thanks for any help.

depth changes and temperature differences for bass. Transition zones usually have some fish. its hard to get a good image of fish on the display in less than 10 ft of water. Now if I'm fishing deep bass in 15-25ft, then sometimes I get some arcs, but depth and temp are what I rely on most.
