The best is a "near nothin". Heddon discontinued them years ago,but I special ordered 500 a year ago so they made them for me. It looks like a Pop R but it has weights in it. You can throw them at least twice as far as torpedos, pop r's ect... I always had a problem with unweighted top water lures in windy conditiond when schools are moving and you can't throw far enough to get to them and you dont want to scare them with trolling motor..The ones I have are clear with a white tail.

Birds, I remember the "near nothin". Might even have one if I dug deep enough. It had a lead ball inside and it would cast farther than any other lure, but you had to work it fast to keep it on top. About 5 years ago I started fly fishing and had been kayaking prior to that, so when you put the two together you can really get close to the fish. Went to Bridgeport last Sunday and the sand bass were hitting for the 1st few hours in the morning. Caught them on white clousers.

Birds-Bass-Bucks and Kayak_Flyfisher, Welcome to the forum! Kayak_Flyfisher, were you at Grapevine Saturday? I flyfish from a kayak from time to time. Have been for a couple of years. Someone may stop by and ask you if you're "Fly", don't worry it just means your loops are getting too big and you're snapping your back cast like me. Laugh it off and have fun.

I like a bleeding pearl chug bug...it seems to get the big ones out of the schools more consistently for me than any other bait I have used for schooling whites.

Fly, Nope, I wasn't at Grapevine Saturday. Went to Bridgeport Sunday. I have a 16 ft orange Hobie Adventure kayak with the pedal power. I just changed to the larger fins and larger rudder and it just makes it better. I don't have to use the paddle unless I get too close to a boat dock or shore and want to back up. With my eagle 240S GPS/depthfinder I can cruise at 4 mph plus easily and have gotten to 6.6 a few times in a quick sprint. If trolling, hands free at 2.5 to 3 mph.

Kayak_Flyfisher, That's a nice ride. They won't mistake you for me unless you wear a goofy hat.

I use a weighted casting cork with a 36 inch leader with one jig at the end and one half way up catch two at a time and you can cast well beyond the school and pop it through them. there has been times when not much on the surface but you can see them on the graph I will cast out and virgously pop this on the surface and catch some. other times I have trooled with this set up and catch sandies. Surprised no one mentioned this but, here goes, no matter what you throw, when getting after schooling whites, have some barbless hooks on your lures. This allows you to get the hook out of them quicker and put you back on fishing. Which, after all, is why you are out there! Don't worry about losing fish either, as long as you keep the line taut you'll be in good shape. Try it some time.

You can tie a hook on toe nail clippers and catch white bass when they are boiling.
Good idea on smashing the barbs of the hooks for schooling whites. That works well and makes the fishing faster and more enjoyable!

I'll second the barbless suggestion! Been using only barbless for the past 10 years or more -- only way to go. Less force to set the hook is required, easy to remove them from both fish and human! Only way to go!
