Studies of prey utilization by Largemouth show that in weedy waters, bass grow more slowly due to difficulty in acquiring prey. Less weed cover allows bass to more easily find and catch prey, but this consists of more open-water baitfish. Paradoxically, with little or no cover, bass can devastate the prey population and starve or get stunted. Fisheries managers need to take all these factors into consideration when designing regulations for specific bodies of water.

Man HE77 YES! Two words for Joe Pool! I had a grass pattern out there working so well that I never got skunked as long as I could find some hydrilla, and I mean never zeroed. Usually ended up with a couple of fish over the 21" slot in a days fishing too.

That depends. Do you like to fish for your bass in a fairly predictable area (in or near grass), or do you like to fish for them when they are roaming around all over the lake, typically suspended and chasing shad?

not only is it bad for the fish, but the natural clarity of the water diminishes without the filtration by the vegetation.

you cant group all species of bass into one category... spots feed in different areas and will do well in open water.. largemouth.. not so much..... go do a creel survey of lake cypress springs then compare that to years ago when the grass was in the lake. Form a graph of devestation of grass vs. spotted bass count vs. largemouth bas count.....
you will see as the grass is killed off, the largemouth population diminishes and the spotted bass population increases... which really sucks, because spotted bass dont grow more than ~3 pounds each in that lake!!!!

The lake I fish up here is divided in two parts. Both sides had lots of grass and fish. Well a few people made the news with drownings ( said legs got tangled in the grass). So that side they killed the grass. Fishing has never been good after that. The water is always dirty and cloudy. Other side pretty clear.
Youve got to catch them every single day, said VanDam
