I was fishing yesterday and lost two hooks in some of the catfish I caught and released. One was a J style the other was a treble. I have often wondered if the fish I return with hooks in them survive? In the past I have caught fish with hooks still in them from other fishermen so I know that at least some still feed. Just curious if this usually spells the end for the fish or do they somehow survive. I can't imagine that the hook can pass through the fish.

Yes and no. Some hooks will rust away, some being stainless won't. Also depends on just how it's embeded and where.

Agreed with above. I've cleaned cats and other fish that had old hooks and even lures in them and they still seemed healthy.
