I am a member of a fishing club in North Texas. We have a 30acre pond that has been there and managed for almost 100 years. We recently drained the lake and killed all of the fish to renovate it by adding depth, structure, new dam etc. and are about to re-stock the lake. We have a biologist advising us in hopes of making it a productive bass lake. He advised not putting crappie in the lake because they compete with the bass, but a number of the members of the club want to fish for crappie. I was hoping to get opinions on whether or not you can grow trophy bass in a new lake of this size with the presence of crappie? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

The less competition for the bass, the larger they will grow. If you are after trophy bass, follow the biologists advice and don't stock crappie. Find another place to go crappie fishing. There's plenty of them...but not many real trophy bass places.

Ask the Biologist about stocking it with black crappie and he may be ok with that but white crappie now thats a big no-no.

Either species of Crappie; like Meadowlark mentioned, not the best plan all around.

No difference in black and white crappie fecundity.

The members of the club better listen to the Biologist.

The quick answer is not stock crappie. However, small crappie are an excellent forage base for bass. The reality is that it is difficult to keep the crappie in check. We have several trophy bass lakes that do have crappie, but we ask our membership to remove crappie everytime they catch them. If I had my choice, like you do, I would not stock them.
