we bought a place at fork and fish 30-40 weekends a year. we are strickly fun fishing novices, no tournaments. we decided to catch fish we needed to learn some good spots, and techniques, and to do that we'd go out with guides.
we have been out about 7-8 times, our best day was a 40 fish day, and our worse day was a zero fish morning,..zero. we called it a day after a few hours and rescheduled..the guide, one of the best on the lake said that they were locked down, and we'd be better off coming back another day...the rest of the trips were anywhere from 12 to 30 or so, with the biggest about 8/9 pounds..fishing by ourselves, in three years we have still never had a day where we caught more than 15 in one day, we have caught a lot of fish, but 5-8 a day is a good day for us.
these guides are really good, they know the lake, patterns from day to day, baits, patterns, and where the fish are...there are people that live on the lake that can also fish as good as a guide. they -guides and residents- know all the variables,..they can disect the lake, in a couple hours and be catching fish right next to your boat, and all you can do is watch...
so whats my point,..? bass fishing even at fork is hard-hard-hard, you need to be really fish-lake smart to trick these fish into chasing and eating a piece of plastic on a string. we are learning, slowly, but its a educating slow process.
my suggestions to you are to read-read-read,..find everything you can from tom redington and lance vick, they both have web sites and guide on fork. read forum entries marc mitchell, clint wright, and jason hoffman,..these guys all make a living on fork, and provide excellent fishing information,...ask some of the tackle shop guys what they suggest,..cameron at lfm and the guys at the bait shop will always take a minute if the can..
take a guided all day trip, during the week is best, less traffic,...after 3 years we feel like we are still just scratching the surface,..time on the water, knowing what you want to do, versatility, and knowing a couple good spots are keys to getting a few fish...jim

Very well said, Sir - I too have had my very best days fishing with some of the best teachers on the water.
I have been fishing for years, but I try to go fishing with a guide three or four times a year.

We've been averaging 20+ fish per night in June (out of 17 trips so far). On a slow night, we may get a dozen. But on a good night, we may get 30+.
Once it gets into mid July, the 20+ trips will be hard to come by. So, if you plan to fish after dark, you shouldn't wait until the bite slows down.
I'm fishing 8:30PM until sunup. Last night, we got several before dark. Then, it slowed until the lake cleared of boats (around midnight). Then, they started biting good.
But you gotta put in your time. Sometimes, the bite is slow until dark, then it gets good until midnight, then slows down. The next day, it will be just the opposite. No rhyme or reason.

Fork has frustrated and disappointed me like no other lake I have been to over the years. I only fish it a few times per year, so I consider that I have gotten out of it, what I have put into it (time wise). But I have been getting better and better at it, just never great. at least not till yesterday.

I went out with a friend whom I had lost touch with for more than 12 years. He flew in from Georgia last Tuesday and will be flying out next Tuesday. We used to fish all the time when we lived in North Carolina, so once we found each other on Facebook, we immediately started talking about going fishing. So I promised him a trip to Fork. Unfortunately a couple of years back, he broke his back, has become disabled and battles the demons of depression every day. What better therapy than fishing with an old friend

Anyway, so we end up at the ramp yesterday at 5:45 am and ready to go. banana Due to his back I made sure to put in where I knew there would be as little of a boat ride as possible. I read on here as much as possible on what was working, to try and make short work of figure out the fish. Well, it didn't work. I ended up fishing my Fork confidence bait, a white spinner bait.

I ended up with 8 fish, with 5 of them being in the slot and 2 over 20", Best day on Fork for me ever. I've caught more in numbers before, but the quality was the best. Unfortunately I could not for the life of me get my friend bit. I would even make sure he had the first cast at prime cover.

Sorry to go into such a long post on this, but the moral of the story for me, was that I tried what is "working" for what seems like most on here and it didn't work for me. I was catching nice fish on a white spinnerbait in the heat of the day in 1 - 2 feet of water. My biggest (22 1/8") was caught right at noon in 2' feet of water next to a dock.

And by the way, Fork fish are BEAST. I am used to the sickly, lazy Summer fight of those Joe Pool bass. If my friends back allows, we are going back this afternoon woot

I hear this a lot. Most guys will go this time of year and hit the water at daylight then fish until 2 or so. They give up when it gets hot. This is a Big Mistake.

I know it doesn't make sense but last Saturday we didn't get on the water until Noon. It was HOT! We fished a bunch of deep spots with deep cranks and C-rigs and drop shots. No luck...

We got our first bite at 4 pm. Heat of the day. Between 4pm and 6 pm we had 18 off one spot. Did we finally find a school of fish?? Maybe, but I have seen too many times where the fish bit in the hottest part of the afternoon. We had the lake to ourselves.

I fish Fork a lot and I can tell you that the biggest majority of fish that we have put in the boat have been afternoon, especially the big fish. Every time I meet someone that has caught a Giant I will ask them what time of the day they caught it. It is almost invariably afternoon.

Don't ever ask them what they caught it on or how deep or where they caught it... they will lie to ya! LOL!!

Don't feel bad. I have fished Fork many times throughout the years. I started fishing this lake in the early 90's in a belly boat and we caught a bunch of big fish! I don't fish the lake as much as I used too and I only live 20 minutes from the lake. I frequently fish many other lakes throughout the year. I actually went to Fork today to practice using my graphs to find fish. I only caught two, but it was worth it because I learned some new tricks with my graph today that will help me in the future.
