With the heat and fish seeming to be going deeper do you think I'll be better off in my 13' deep boat house at night? I have a green light, do you think an all night trip would be successful? I guess only one way to find out, there are plenty of 8-10 inchers during the day. Still the same small ones at night or maybe some slabs move up?

Unless you can't stand the heat, fishing at night is not necessary to catch good size crappie at the Vine. Look for brushpiles in 15 - 25' of water. Fish minnows or jigs very slowly. You'll catch fish.

Rob, this is the time of year that the bigger fish move out of the docks. Slip/Dock fishing on Grapevine is good October-May but usually best January-March.

You'll catch fish. That's the problem, I'm kinda stuck at 13' under the boat house. Rob, this is the time of year that the bigger fish move out of the docks. Slip/Dock fishing on Grapevine is good October-May but usually best January-March. I have only had it since March, so still learning. I've been happy with the fishing so far. Several 10-15 keeper trips and many 1+ pound slabs, only one 2+ pounder. I have noticed they have started slowing down the last few weeks (although the < 10 have picked up - go through 4 dozen minnows in no time). I was hoping although slower during the day that maybe the night fishing under a light would still be productive in 13 feet? Maybe I just need to focus on the Catfish as I know theyre there, I just prefer Crappie.

I've never done any good at night on Grapevine. Best bite this time of year is from about 8:00 am to 11.30 AM and from about 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. They seem to shut down around 6 pm.

If your fishing at night with minnows in a good spot there is no telling what you will catch. Sandies, Crappie, Bass, Catfish. I always do good at night off our dock at cedar creek.

I think you are right! Last 6 weeks I've been catching them starting about hour after sunrise, they go slow after lunch, and then pick up until 6-7pm. I just had to go try it for myself though. I arrived at 8:15pm last night and should have left after 15 minutes. I caught 2 keepers and some undersized in the remaining 15 minutes before sunset. I then went 4 hours with basically nothing! Not even any real nibbles, about hour after sunset I caught a 12-13" Channel and then finally at 11:30 I caught a 9.75" Crappie. I called it the night at 12:15. The Green Monster fishing light was working great though! Within about 30 minutes it was bringing in the fry and small minnows! Never really saw any big fish except maybe a large shad or small drum now and then. By the end there was just a huge tornado of small minnows circling the light! Any chance this light would actually scare off the fish or were they just not there or more likely not biting? I can see why the Crappie get all over the minnows as most of the natural minnows are small and shad are too large, I think minnows are just the perfect size for them and rare so they cant resist. Here is video I took of the minnows circling the Green Monster.

Thats about as many bait fish as I normally see when running lights. One time at Aquilla they were so thick it looked like you could walk on top of them. We did really good that night. Never seen that much bait again in a light.

Here is video I took of the minnows circling the Green Monster. I have two of them that are 120 volt 175 watt MV lamps I run off an power inverter in my boat. I have to fish the dark edge of the light circle to do any good. In fact I hold them 10' off one side of the boat and fish off the other side of the boat.

well, I went back out there this afternoon to see if I could get enough for a mess. arrived at 1:45 pm and had a 11" by 2:00 pm. no more keepers and I left at 3:45 pm. pretty hot to not be catching any fish. did catch a couple small Largemouths & Drum. I think they are just deeper than 13' with this heat. over coming month I'll experiment with morning fishing 9-11 AM and also real early 2-7 AM.

I fish the Vine almost exclusively at night during the summer because its too damn hot and there's no time to fish in the mornings before work. There's usually a window between 10PM and Midnight when they start and stop biting. In addition to a couple of brushpiles, I fish the slips at Silverlake and/or Northshore in water about 15-18' and do good enough for my expectations, at least a few keepers up to a dozen at best. A submersible light helps without question. Only problem with the light is that it also attracts white bass and everything else. Good luck and keep at it.
