I am new to the dfw coming from phoenix area. I was bass fishing on lewisville and got blanked on our way back to the boat ramp we watched the sea gulls hit the water so we went over to play. we caught a couple of small whites and all of a sudden my line ripped out of the reel liked A catfish killed my shad rap!!!!! reeleing it in I discovered to my suprise a nice and i do mean nice suprise 3 1/2 pound white. NICEwas better fight than any black bass Ive ever landed. But every one was telling me without looking at the fish that it was a hybrid. of course I will defend thats the largest white I have ever seen What do you feed these things here? how do u tell the difference? all the ones in the boat looked the same.

whites and hybrids are tough to tell when they are roughly the same size. hybrids grow much larger and have two tooth patches on the toungue, and the whites only have one. hybrids fight like a mother, just like the bigger stripers and smaller whites. they like to feed on shad.

Dark Star got it....
Go to the nearest Wal-Mart or sporting goods store and pick up TPW Outdoor Annual Hunting and fishing regulations. Look on page 40. Shows the differences and where to look... Son, you had better watch out - this Striper, Sand Bass, and Hybrid stuff is contagious....

Bass fishing - Whats that?

Oh yeah! Welcome to the forum.....

When you drag one in look at the tongue patch...Make sure you're looking right in the middle of the tongue. The book doesn't do justice - the patches are sort of an off tan color on the white tongue.

If there's two distinct tooth patches running parallel it's either a striper or a hybrid. A sandie (white bass) has one tooth patch that looks sorta like a heart. Yellow bass don't have a patch at all.

Then look at the stripes. The stripes on a striper will be more pronounced and many run to the tail. The stripes on a hybrid will be more broken, not as pronounced, but still many run to the tail like the striper. (The hybrid body reminds me more of a football in shape.) The sandies will have only one distinct stripe running completely to the tail and all the stripes are rather faint.

After you see a few of them together you'll start picking it up and will be able to get real close by just looking, but the tonque patch doesn't lie.

Remember - the hybrid is a cross between a striper and a sand bass...that's why they have characteristics of both.

Hope this helps - Good Luck!! cheers

Here in the next few weeks them sandies are gonna start running and the fun starts. Throw anything at 'em and hang on... Later in the year the birds tell the story. The shad are at or near the surface cause the sand bass are after em. Put a larger rattle trap or bomber "a" in the middle of em and let it go down a bit then haul it in. Something will take it...... Using live shad for bait is always a good backup.

We try and stay away from those green things (LMBs) (just kidding)
