Just moved back to Austin. Never fished here: In fact, only ever fished freshwater once before. I tried Walter E Long lake the other morning; missed one bite. I could see fish, but they were out of reach from bank. Tried a jig on a spinning setup, but tangled up every time. I have since bought some topwater lures (frogs, poppers, etc), and some smaller (I fished saltwater)insect-like flies.
From what I have briefly read, people fish different depths, but I only have a wf5f line. I also don't have a boat!
I need help finding car accessible locations, where I don't need to wade.
Also, do they have lit areas anywhere here, for night time?
Is the Colorado downtown light enough to fish at night?

I've fished town lake from red bud isle, been there 3 times and only caught 1 largemouth bass. I've heard town lake is fished for carp pretty often.

You might try brushy creek in cedar park. Its accessible by car and there's plenty of banks to fish from.

There are a great many places to fish in and around Austin. I would suggest getting Kevin Hutchison's updated edition of Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country. Brushy Creek is accessible from many places (most of them wadeable), talk to Chris up at Living Waters Fly Shop in Round Rock for more information as to particulars.

Kickboats and kayaks open up a lot more water to fish, getting you away from the limited bank access and sometimes crowded low water crossings.

Check out a local fly fishing club, there are three of them, and they all have members who are often looking for someone to go fishing with. Do a web search for Austin Fly Fishers, Central Texas Flyfishers, and San Gabriel Fly Fishers.

Bastrop is a good lake if you have a boat of some sorts. You can also rent a canoe or yak on LBL. Not alot of good flyrod bankin' around here, you might want to look into a tube, yak, or toon.

I'll second the vote for Brushy Creek Lake Park up in Cedar Park. The times I've been out there, I've been in a canoe; however, there's lots of good bank access, and it seems to be pretty solid fishing.

You might want to take a look at the San Gabriel Fly Fishers website. They have a map of good fishing spots in the area. Most of them include wading or paddling, but there are some ones where you can stay dry.

My only other suggestion is that you make a visit to talk to Chris Johnson who owns Living Waters Fly Shop up in Round Rock. He'll be able to tell you what's fishing well and what to use.

You said "don't need to wade" Is that because you don't want to wade or will wade, but prefer not to? Because most spots that I'm aware of will require some amount of wading.
