I have one more question about keeping shad alive and using salt in the live well. I have seen three kinds of salt to buy - Rock Salt, Iodized salt, and that soft pretzel salt or Margarita salt. Is it the Rock Salt the one I want to use?
Thanks
Michael

Flounder, for years now I have heard it said not to use Iodinized salt. Something about it adds a bitter taste to the shad that the fish can detect??? So, I just stay away from Iodinized Salt. Don't figure the iodine is required for the shads health anyway. Rock Salt is okay, but it is tougher to dissolve. The very best salt I have found if you don't do this real often, is pickling salt in the five pound sacks. It gets a bit expensive if you did this every day, and you can justify one of those big sacks of stock salt. But, pickling salt is easy to dissolve. On the outside of the bag is should say: "This salt is non-iodinized, and not recommended as a dietary suppliment", or something like this??

Flounder-
I bought a 50 lb bag of stock salt at a feed store out by Lake Richland Chambers a year ago and I think it cost me about $4. It dissolves fairly quickly and you can't beat the price.

Stock salt. It's cheap. I've used Morton's rock salt (ice cream salt) but like the guys pointed out, rock salt dissolves slower than stock salt.
I have a 27 gallon tank so I divide the salt up and put 3 cup portions in zip lock bags.
Each trip, I just grab a bag of salt and throw in the tank. Theoretically, 1 cup per 10 gallons of water but more is better than less!

I use stock salt. Because of the grit it leaves behind in the tank, when I empty my bag, I think I'm going to switch. I hear the salt they use for water softners works. Got to see what it costs first

Thanks for the info. I bought a box of pickling salt at lunch today. I didn't have time to get to the feed store. I go Friday night for bait and fishing Saturday morning. I'll post how I do. I have the live well, shad keeper, salt, and tank foam remover. I'll post how it all works. Thanks to all for the info.
