anyone ever used one of these? lookin for a decent 5 wt setup for fw application- bass, panfish, carp etc out of kayak or kick tubes. id prefer to spend less than this on a rod but i might be able to splurge. are there better rods for my application that wont break the bank as much?

I have never touched one so cannot comment on the value of this series of rods. But I can tell you that TFO makes some mighty fine fly rods that come in at least $100 less, even more in some cases.

Might pop in to the Katy Bass Pro and do some test casting.

TFO 05 76 4 P 5 Wt. 7'-6" 4 3.0 IM6 Graphite $149.95
TFO 05 86 4 P 5 Wt. 8'-6" 4 3.7 IM6 Graphite $149.95
TFO 05 90 4 P 5 Wt. 9'-0" 4 3.8 IM6 Graphite $149.95
TFO 05 90 6 P 5 Wt. 9'-0" 6 4.2 IM6 Graphite $209.95

That is a very good rod.

The most popular version is the 9 ft 5 wt 4 peice rod.

TFO 05 90 4 P 5 Wt. 9'-0" 4 3.8 IM6 Graphite $149.95

Sage is a different category than TFO.
You probably couldnt go wrong with either, but Sage makes some fine rods in all their price ranges.

I have 2 5WT that I use for just about everything. One is a Cabela's Traditions II 2 Piece and the other is a Scientific Anglers 4piece. Both are 9'. Both work exceptionally well. But I find myself using the 4 pc more ofter, cause it breaks down smaller and fits behint the seat. Thinking about listing the 2 pc on craigslist and getting a 2 or 3 wt.

So do you need the horsing power to dig bigger bass out of cover and vegetation? Do you like rods that tend to be faster or slower? Possibly throwing big bugs? The TFO Clouser - TF 05 89 4 X - could be a worthy contender. Clouser's rods are supple in the tip and have incredible backbone. They aren't as sensitive as the 3X more expensive Sage Z Axis, but they are a heck of a rod.

I agree with the mighty TFO Clouser! I use it for anything, bass carp catfish. heck, I have even tried for a gar with it! it is one AWESOME rod. that rod with the chartreuse (now gray) wrap on the handle in all my pictures I have posted is my clouser. I LOVE it!

I tested a TFO Clouser rod at Toledo Bend, I loved it. I cannot remember now though if it was a five wt, or a six wt rod. Either weight would be good to have if you only get one rod for now. It is not a cheap rod, that is why I don't have one already. For heavy cover the Mini-Mag is a great rod, I tried one of them out too. I don't own a TFO rod yet. So far I have a Crosswater Redington, and 2 Albright GP rods.

orvis is still doing their buy a rod get a reel free sale through june. i can get a 5 wt hydros and a battenkill large arbor reel for basically $500. i have yet to find a deal that will beat this in this price range. i casted both a 7 and 5 wt hydros today and loved them both. i casted a tfo pro, ticr, ticrx and clouser and sage vantage and flight, didn't like any of them as much as the hydros. of course none of them were $500 rods...

is the action of the loop aeg similar to the hydros?
