Spent 3 days making sure every wire was right. Routed everthing correctly. Made sure it was all properly done and the mounting was perfect. Yep,turned it on expecting great things.Nada dam thing on the screen. Totally BLACK. Went thru everthing again. Nope beautifull BLACK screen. Always had Lowrance. Doesnt speak well of a product when it wont work at least out of the box. At this point I wish I could describe here were I would like Humminbird to stick this 898SI! realmad realmad

Did it attempt to come on? Were you at the lake or on land? Did you press and hold the power button? Is your power turned on the boat? Where did you connect your power cord?

Button elumination lights came on, pressed and held pwr. switch,in the driveway,12.4v @ the plug to the unit, ran 12 gauge new dedicated 12 gauge from batt to new fuse panel w/3amp fuse. Screen never even flikered. Prob wouldnt be too upset but planned to leave tonight for a 5 day vacation w/the wife-who also took off work. Do they even test these things before they leave to ship. If I had bought this locally I would be there this am to exchange for a Lowrance. Even now the best scenario will be a week before I get another.

Dog gone it. Call Humminbird at 8am at Toll-free: 1-800-633-1468.
Maybe they can send one to where you are going and the whole trip will not be a waste. I bet they would overnight for a Saturday delivery.

Well, calling customer service was a joke. Solutions ranged from "your batt is prob low"-not> 12.4v.at the plug. Take it to a dealer and plug it in top see if it works. Call where you bought it and see if they will send you another (sure they will)and
"you may have to send it back". What great answers! Sure wish Linda was still w/Lowrance.

Man I hate to see that with any brand of electronic's. I would try getting hold of eddie@humminbird email address and see if he can help you. I believe that bobcat1 has his email contact. He's help a lot of humminbird user on here.

I had the same type of problem with HB 798 and it turned out to be the power connector needed to be just right in the harness. Once I got that right, it has turned on every time.

I'd carry it to Bass Pro. I bet you are not far from there if you live in Justin. I bet they would plug it in for you. If it works there then you would at least know what could be wrong. Is the power chord hooked up correctly? Are the pins making contact? Lot of variables. If I was close to you I would let you plug it into my boat and see if it powered up. Anyone that lives close by with a Humminbird SI can let you try it on their boat. If you want to bring it to Frisco we can try it on my boat tonight.

Bobby, I really appreciate that offer but im a little too frustrated with this whole affair right now. However I did see that after the pwr switch is turned on it is coming on but, get this. You can only see a faint display while the sun is on it,like a ghost display. If you get close and try to see it better, its gone. The brightness control is barely visible and when(if you can see it)you move the brightness it has no effect. The only time you can see any display is when the sun is on it. Thats why last night you could see NO display at all. I also tried earlier(just to double check)to take the plug/wire harness off the boat and head unit in-hand and tried anothr batt. out of my truck.Same results. No word from Eddie yet.

I hate to see the electronic gremilins at work. I just went through the same thing with some network problems. VERY frustrating!

Good luck!

Your transducer has to be connected too for it to work. That is weird that you can only see it in the sun. Sure sounds like a low battery to me. Have you tried a direct hook up to another battery while connected to transducer? You might also try to spread the pins a little. Be very careful when or if you do.

forkvet,

Sounds like maybe the backlight isn't working properly. If the unit would have to go back for repair anyway, and I had exhausted all other options, I wouldn't be above given it a sharp slap or two on the side/back just to see if I couldn't get it to see things my way. Though I am a Lowrance man myself, I think that with anything electronic, sometimes it just comes down to the luck of the draw. Thousands of perfectly working units may have shipped, but occasionally someone gets a dud. From everything I have heard about Humminbird's support I'm sure that you will be well taken care of.

One last thought, even though you cant see the display, if someone could give you the key sequence to perform a hard reset it might be worth a shot trying that.
