This may sound like a dumb question, but will my transom mount transducer work if I mount it in the hull? I am reflooring my boat, and I am curious if it I can relocate it. Pardon my ignorance, but I just don't know.......

One should never apologize if he has a question. I think there is a chance your transom-transducer might work there.

Peering over the transom at 50mph to find that
elusive "smooth spot" is just plain poor
judgement.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I may give it a shot and see how it works.

it should work just make sure you find the lowest point back there and a level surface. it wont go through 2 layers of fiberglass.

My Lowrance skimmer works fine shooting through the hull.
It won't work on aluminum.

put one of my bird transom ducers in the hull and it works just fine, make sure it is in the bottom of the bilge and epoxy in with no bubbles in the epoxy.

I read somewhere, either here or in one of my fishfinder manuals, that you can put a couple of gallons of water in your bilge and test it out. Sandbag it down so it doesn't move around on you and put a couple of gallons in, enough so that when your boat is at various stages/angles of on-plane, that it keeps the air out from under the loose transducer. Wherever I read it, they recommended trying several locations to see which worked best.

I had them install my HB 598ci in hull where the old Lowrance worked and now my HB does not show the depth of water reading no matter what setting I have set up. The guy who installed has done may bass boat with not problem. Even sent the HB back to factory and all they did was say all is good. What gives is the transducer back or not installed correctly.

I have installed a lot of them. Some of them were pucks and some skimmers. The puck are a little easier to install but they all will work on a solid core fiberglass hull. Lowrance once sent me some special epoxy. It was a 2 part putty type. Similar consistency to Marine Tex or JB Weld. Mostly I use something called PC7 and it is great. Lower viscosity than the clear and no air bubble problems at all. The main thing is to get the transducer level side to side at a slight upward angle to the front. That is if you want to run the DF on plane. I like them as far back as possible. Of course towards the back is where you are going to have the most level area. Lightly sand the bottom of the tranducer with 100 - 120. Also make sure the inside of hull is clean and free of any gel coat. You can use plumbers putty to make a dam for the epoxy.

I have good access to a good clean spot in the hull, on the bottom layer of glass. I may give it a shot. If it doesn't work, oh well, I will buy the correct transducer
