You taught him a lesson that goes waaaayyy beyond fishing. No big speeches. You just showed him the way by example and one sentence.

You know, I sometimes get tired of kids bugging me when I'm fishing at local ponds. They seem to always want something (can I use some of your bait, lures, poles, etc.), but last time I went to Bass Pro I bought one of those cane pole set ups just for the type scenario you described. I am going to give it to the next kids that comes up to me with a can, string, and a old rusty hook, or with nothing.

I feel a little cheap now... lol. You went the extra mile for sure.
