Fall fishing for sandies at Gpv has been very good. Out again today (11-11) caught and released 25 at Meadowmere and 25 at Murrell all on slabs near the bottom. On at 730am off by 1030am just as the wind picked up. Birds have been working making it easy to find the fish. Kept one 15in and two 14in to blacken on the grill for lunch. TASTY! Careful in the wind and best of luck......... Don

Any particular color work better? I have yet to catch much fish on the vine. I would have thought that I had figured that place out by now since I live walking distance from the place! But I guess that's why I'm a green horn

if your a new commer to the lake give me a call and book a trip and i will show you some excellent holes to fish for some magnum sandies and blue cats,,i have guided on that lake since 1987. there are some road beds and gravel pits as well as humps that produce countless numbers and some real quality fishing.

DonNovak,

Thanks for the post and the information. My back is finally getting better and I am finally going to get back out this week. It's been 7 weeks since I last wetted a line and it's been tough.

I don't trust my back enough yet to tackle a good wind, or even any rain, but maybe I'll get lucky.

Kevin

Holzer,
If you don't book a trip with Jim Marcum, you can try tailhummers (blue/white, lemon/white) along with the slabs. Let the hummer sink, sometimes to the bottom, and reel back, bouncing off the bottom. The tailhummer is an awesome bait.

Kevin, Sorry to hear youve been out so long. If you need help or want a fishing partner on gpv to assist with loading up on sandies feel free to email me. I believe the sandy bite will be good for the next few weeks. Don

Thanks for the tips. Depending on the wind, maybe this weekend I can give them a try. Back to Barrlows...

went to grapvine this morning to do some
looking at some winter time cat holes.
greg from bug a bass and i got there about daylight and caught our shad and then we we found some pretty good cats. no monsters but some good eaters up to about 7 lbs.
all in about 25 to 37 feet of water.
sand bass were all over , we watched people chase them all day.

fall is probably the best time for grapevine
and there werent to many crazy people out there,

see ya

On the water at 730am. Found a few at Rockledge a few more just up the north shore. Looked around the island, Meadowmere,- a couple more but not much till 10am and the wind picked up. Located the limit at Murrell and was done by 1045am. Easy to be patient with this beautiful weather! Hoping the dependable bite will hold for a couple more weeks. Good Fishing, Don

With mote than 20 years experance on Gvine, my best bet is chrome and blue rattle traps, white or chrome slabs on clear days. On cloudy days I use a gold/black rattletrap or a white ct grub in front of a yellow ct grub. Sometimes a yellow shad with black dots works too.
Have not had much luck with chartruse sandy baits on Gvine.
When you fish slabs, keep the hooks very sharp. Retie after every 5 fish or you will lost baits and fish.
Jim

Went out twice over the Thanksgiving weekend, caught a lot of sandies both days. Caught a lot of 12"+ fish and a fair number over 14", biggest was just shy of 16". Chartreuse baits were working well, with the 1 oz. Silver Dollar jigging spoon working most consistently. Fish were hitting near the bottom in 19'-27' of water near Murrell Park and along the ridge east of the island. Ran into Jim Marcum on the ramp on Saturday, waiting for Bug-a Bass to arrive. Jim is a very friendly fellow who was willing to share a lot of his knowledge about fishing for the big blues they've been catching lately, including showing me the rigs they are using. Always nice to run across another TFFer.
