What kind of catfish is this. I keep catching them in my pond and I have been told they are "mudcats" and they are no good. Does anyone know what it is and are they bad. They all seem to be about foot long and about a pound or so. Sorry for the link but I dont know how to put the photo on the post.

That is a bullhead. If you want to reduce the population of them in your pond, get you a 10-20 pound yellow cat, he will love the fresh fish diet.

So they are good eating? My wife is stuck on Channel Catfish and thinks these aren't any good. I will give them a try. Are they only good bait for flatheads or do they work for anything else.

Are "bullheads" and "mudcats" the same thing?

Bullheads in the 1-4 lb. range are some of the most flavorfull eating Cat's. The smallers make Awesome flatty bait but I would not be surprised if you come across a Blue or Channel.
Bullheads and Mudcats are the same species AKA pollywogs.
Tight Lines!!!

how do you identify a mudcat/bullhead? easy to distinguish from a channel? there's no limits on size/#?

the easiest way to tell them apart is the tail. the channel cats have a "v" shaped tail that is very defined, the mudcat has a square tail....... i have called them box-tail cats all my life, makes it easy to remember! just my .02

Looks like a bigish yellow bullhead to me. The black bullheads have white whiskers as far as I know. They are OK to eat as long as the water is clean.
