I have some Blue Water questions. Thanks in advance for your input.

1. When does Blue Water reach Port Aransas? (Months)
2. How far offshore is the Blue Water typically?
3. Does anyone know of any sites available that show the Blue Water / Gulf currents or anything that might help track? I have been on the NOAA site and haven't found anything.

Thanks

We went out of freeport and the bluewater was within sight of land. Pretty crazy, but yea it was really close. It depends on many different factors.

Unfortunately LandPirate is stuck at home with a nasty stomach bug. And to make matters worse LandPirate's boat is out of commission until my new thru-hull deck drains arrive....they're back ordered.

Actually, reports from all of my friends indicate the really blue, cobalt blue, water is 60+ miles offshore right now. There is some clear green water and "kinda blue" waters inshore of that at the moment.

A free website you can check out is www.texas-offshore.com. Learn to use the "Bluewater Supermap". Satellite imagery and chlorophyll imaging will show where the best blue water is. You can also see where the temperature breaks are and the rips.

There's lots of weedlines forming up. Some have been productive while others are barren.

A blue marlin was caught just offshore of Big Southern this week. Lots of red snapper are being caught along with Amberjacks, the occasional wahoo and some small mahi.

Another couple of weeks should really turn it on.

Pelagic species prefer the clearer blue water which is also normally warmer than the green or brown water that is nearest to shore. The blue water moves north from the Caribbean during summer time and brings the pelagics with it.

or to put it another way, when blue water comes in towards the piers and jetties, you can catch some cool fish that aren't usually around. Something that makes summer fishing along kinda like a grab bag... never know what you might hook up on.

Are the depths on the NOAA charts in feet or fathoms?

Not sure what map you're looking at so it's hard to say. It'll be in either feet or fathoms. 1 Fathom = 6ft.

I'm referring to the charts on this page:

http://www.pursuetheoutdoors.com/boating/nautical-charts/gulf-coast.php

It's showing numbers like 30 for 2 miles off of Surfside Beach and 8 in the middle of Galveston Bay.

ETA: I see now that the legend says feet. I never knew Galveston Bay was so shallow!

Yeah, all of the bays are shallow except for the dredged channels. Hence the need for shallow running boats.

The Gulf is quite shallow too until you get to the Continental Shelf at which point it drops off dramatically.
