Went past the tank that we put a dozen channel cat into two summers ago and saw something disturbing the top of the water. First thought was a bunch of baby snakes. The blob moved close to the North side where I could get a good look. Turns out it was about 50, 4" to 8" catfish just bunched up. I could see their mouths at the top of the water most of the time, but they were also kind of rolling on top of each other. A couple of times, I saw a perch roll over the top of the bunch. Before I left I saw another spot of them doing the same thing. The tank is full and about 16' - 18' deep.

Are you sure that its channels that are in the "blob"? Sounds like maybe bullhead behavior and they have no problem spawning in ponds and reproducing like crazy. They get in those "blobs" for protection and feeding.
Either way, you've got some fishing to do to keep that pond from being overpopulated with fish.

The tank was totally dry and we had it cleaned out. Waited a year to let it fill and 'recharge' then put in the few channel cat, bluegill, and minnows. The tank is basically landlocked and only gets water from pasture run-off, so there shouldn't be any way for bullheads to get there. I may try to catch some today.

Bullhead are like perch! They get there from birds that carry eggs on their feet. They grow fast and reproduce like rabbits! Catch them and use them as live bait for yellowcat somewhere.

It sounds like they are piping for air. However, they don't usually get together in a DO problem.
If they are bullheads, they probably came in when stocked. Or, someone may have been doing you a favor. Don't buy the bird deal anymore than I believe storks bring babies.
