I'm having problems casting a c-rig. Weight and bait passing each other in the air, causing backlash. Not every time, but enough to frustrate. Have tightened down on brakes, to the point of only short casting. Is there a technique, or possibly rod length, or action that would help? I'm using a 6'6" MH with fast tip. Any help would be appreciated.

I use a 7'er and do a "whirl-wind" cast over my head. Launches it pretty good. What weight you using?

Sorry, forgot to add, I'm using a 3' leader with 3/4 ounce brass weight, throwing a big brush hog.

I usually use a 1 oz weight with a 2/0 hook and a baby brush hog or worm. The bigger the bait, the bigger the hook. My leaders usually are within a 2-3 ft range.

I also use Power Pro braid, 65 lb test as the main line. Cast very well!

Make sure you aren't "snap casting" it. On the back cast let it pause at the back to get it all lined up then hurl it. I good MH 7ft rod with a stiffer tip is good.

I try and "sling it" when casting. I usually send it out sideways and I am usually using a 1/2 ounce weight but the 3/4 ounce weight shouldn't make it any harder to cast.

My c-rig set up is a 7 1/2 feet Falcon Low Rider. I would recommend going to at least a 7 foot rod for c-riggin. The next c-riggin rod I get will be an 8 footer.

I think regardless of what you use for bait and weight size, sometimes your line will knot itself up while casting (it can loop around itself)...

It just happens periodically...at least for me anyway?

Thanks. May play with the casting. Makes perfect since to get momentum going before releasing. Can't believe I didn't think of that.

It takes a lil gettin used to but I've about perfected it and can launch my rig prob 20-30 ft MORE than my buddy with the EXACT same setup. But then again, he sucks! grin

Use a wide spool reel. You'll cast farther with less backlash.

I like the sidearm cast on a 7 ft. rod. 3 ft leader with a rattlesnake on the end!!

pegging the sinker will improve your casting ability. don't worry about clackers, beads, etc. sinker makes plenty of noise.

One other thing, I picked this up from Casey down at Amistad last year. I was one hand casting a C-Rig, and he let me know that it's a good plan to 2 hand your rod when casting a C-Rig.

I normally do just a good overhand cast, I keep the weight about 5 inches from the rod tip as I cast.
