How do you smoke a slab? I saw in a post on here about this. Thanks

Cast it out as far as you dare. Let settle to the bottom. Reel up about 5-7 cranks while raising the rod tip. This brings the bait up off bottom. Let it fall back down while keeping in contact with your line. Repeat until you hook up or retrieve the lure.

So, let it sink, then speed reel it for 5-7 cranks and stop to let it fall back, then speed reel it 5-7 cranks. Is that the correct method?

What time of year is good for this? How small a slab?

Take on large fillet (preferably red fish), get your fire at about 180 F, add wet mesquite wood chunks, close the lid, and let it cook slowly.

When done, cover with a white sauce containing crawfish tails, shrimp, and crab.

Serve with a light white wine!

Most fisherman generally jig in the standard fashion, with a sharp up-and-down twitch of the rod tip that moves the lure a foot or so at a time. He lowers his rod tip with the sinking lure in order to maintain contact and detect a strike.

White bass, like other game fish, often bite a lure on the fall. Johnny Procell, another Dallas-are fishing guide who often fishes for
white bass, has developed an offbeat high speed jigging style that he calls �smoking a slab�.

�I happened onto the technique accidentally,� explains Procell. �I had some clients one
day, and they were catching sand bass jigging straight up and down under the boat. I started experimenting by casting a slab out away from the boat and bouncing it back along
the bottom. It seemed like the faster I moved the lure, the more fish I caught.�

When Procell is smoking, he casts his jigging spoon out, lets is sink all the way to the
bottom, then cranks the reel handle furiously for 10 to 12 turns. Then he throws the reel
into free spool and allows the slab to flutter to the bottom once more before beginning another brief sprint toward the boat. Procell watches his line closely as the slab sinks. Strikes on a falling lure are difficult to detect when the reel is in free spool. If the line twitches, Procell clamps his thumb on the spool, sets the hook, then puts the reel in gear to fight the fish.

If he doesn�t hook the fish, he takes his thumb off the spool and allows the spoon to flutter back down. White bass are apparently attracted to the streaking slab by its frantic motion.

Axman, good point with the article on your second post.
Most people while "smoking" their slab would probably crank it really fast for 8-12 turns and then just freeze (Myself included), which would cause the slab to continue its progression forward.
By free-spooling at the end of the burn, it should allow the slab to fall almost directly down. Or at least the forward momentum would be greatly decreased.

That's gonna be a hard habit to get into. And of course, when you're free-spooling, you shoud probably keep your thumb on the spool. I've caught more sandies than I care to count by setting the hook on a free falling slab bite with the reel disengaged just by clamping my thumb down on the spool.

PS. I thought the cooking tips were good too. But, if you're gonna eat that much lead, you might as well saute you up some paint chips to go with those smoked slabs.

Yes, smoking a slab of ribs right now sounds mighty tasty and would definitely fit in after a full day of "smokin' slabs."
