I'm sure thats just the rods left over from the sale they had a long time ago. Those rods were free with a purchase of a baitcast reel over $50

The green ones are only $5.99. The 9.99 ones are a flat black color.

to each his own, but I've always found there rods to be of poor quality. I fish probably twice a week from my boat and when I started taking a friend with me; he went to Academy and bought a bunch of tackle. Every trip we took he would break one in half or break the tip from getting his lure back out of a tree. Their warranty is great though. I fish Allstar Classics for 49.99 from Academy. I've had them for about 6 years and have never had a problem with any of them. I could be wrong. Maybe they've improved the quality of that product. Hell; I hope I'm wrong. All of there lures are amazing nock offs of other companies. I would buy there rods if they've gotten better. Let me know.

I went by last night and picked up a few myself. They even had a couple on clearance for $4.88!

know where I'm stopping on the way home. I have the allstar classics and like them, but will gladly try a $10.00 rod.

Picked me up one of those recently. I'm not sure because I haven't used it yet, but I think that is going to be my new favorite dead sticking rod this next winter.

I noticed at a few of the Academy's also that they had castaway and american rodsmith rods clearanced down to 39.88. Seems like a real good deal.

I fish a 6'6" flat black H2O Texas Waders Special. Paid $24 for it a couple of months ago. Mounted a 10 bearing BPS Tourney Select to it...it has become my fav rod for trout and reds. I think the ones that they had on sale were black with blue and purple winding and cork grips. The green ones have EVA foam grips. The black ones are stiff as hell. I use one as a pitching rig with a pinnacle pls10 reel. Does the job ok, and if I break it, it was only 10 bucks

Our local Academy has the black Classic Edition from the Tournament Choice line for $9.99. Many different lengths, and both spinning and bait-casting. I picked up a 7'6" bait-caster and an Agility reel to help me get re-equated with bait-casting lures and artificial baits, it has been 12 years since I tossed one regularly...

EDIT: the poster above me is correct, these are black with purple/red lettering and have cork grips, they are light and pretty stiff.
