Ok I went fishing Sunday night 5/30 at cayon lake I'm still a newbie at crappie fishing. But still I was fishing timbers in about 20' to 25' with lights about 5' in the water with not much luck I caught 4 crappie two with minnows and two with tube jigs.so how should I target crappie at night? What should I be doing at night? Any help would be appreciated thanks

I don't fish Canyon lake and really don't know what to expect there but I would do my best to find a underwater creek channel. I like to tie up to trees on the edge of an underwater creek, preferrably at a bend in the creek. It seems to me the crappie use the creek channel to move around and as they travel down the creek they get to all the shad brought by the lights and feed. Often the water I fish is 20 to 30 feet on the edges of the creek and right over the creek 35 to 45 feet. That is about all the advice I have but I try to always find a creek bed when fishing timber at night. Sounds like the fish were near if you got 4. You just need to find the mother load. Good luck

Your lights if I understand right is 5' foot deep?
You are going to get tangled up and could lose your light.
Dont need to be that deep. The crappie eyes are on top of their head and look upwards.......you got them looking down for the minnows
One other thing fish the outer edges of the mushroom effect.
If you have two poles one just inside the mushroom and the other pole outside the light range.

Reason being the game fish are attack fish and like to linger in the dark and charge the straggling minnows coming into the light
Set the light about 2 foot deep, the light will mushroom
off the bottom of your boat and will reflect on the underside of the water bouncing the rays back down into the depths.
If you have a good light the mushroom effect should be about 10 to 15 feet

Here is good example, take a flashlight and shine it on the water about 45 degrees, it will bounce off the water an reflect back up into the sky.
The same thing happens under the water the rays bounce back down.
Also if you can jury rig your light for a samll chumming bag, will speed up the process of attracting the minnows.

We have good luck with green lights. Start with your bait on the bottom and work your way up. Leave it at each depth for a couple of minutes. If no bites raise your bait a couple of turns of the handle. When you catch one, fish that depth. If you don't catch any after a few tries you may need to move. Also watch for bait fish around your lights. some people throw out a little corn meal to help with that. Never tried it myself. Any way crappie fishing is a lot of hunting. There are ways to make the hunt a little easier. Just watch the forum, these guys come up with some very good ideas... Best of luck!
