There was a guy on TKF that worked out a pretty good system. I will see if I can find the thread.

I just catch mine from a beach or dock, and pack em in some kind of plastic container. Usually have enough for a good day and don't have to schlep the cast net around in the yak.

Great question, I would love to know a good way to net Tilapia at Fairfield or replenish bait without beaching.

I've got the 4 ft one of these, and on a good day in perfect conditions I can get it to open up right from the yak if i get up on my knees, but it still ain't easy. It's still more productive for me to beach the yak and throw it. Maybe with a lot of practice, but I'm not there yet.

3.5 is easy from the yak. I sit sideways in my yak...it seems to be the key. I hold most of the cast net in my left hand, so i hang my legs off the right side. I wont give text instructions on how to throw, but with a 3.5 ill just grab that second hand full of net much lower than normal. Then throw as normal, just dont plan on throwing any great distance. Still easier/more productive from the bank. I tried my big one, and went for a cool febuary swim. Made me feel stupid!

i know the banks are easier but somtimes not very productive! let me add that i was able to throw my 6 but it ddnt open completly and it is too damn heavy to throw from a sitting position! just thought a smaller net would be easier to yak net, plus less space, quicker ability to thrw it, just tired of waiting for that window when shad can be caught from the banks, yakn nettn would keep me from?fising at certain tims due to lack of bait. thnkx for the input (guess im gunna get a 3.5) i'l post if i ever find one and how it goes

I can throw my 6' net out of mine but I probably should use outriggers when I do, usually I go with the 5' to keep from taking an impromptu nose dive in to the drink. I would show you how I fold it to make it easier to throw but I have no video capability, I will bring it to the TKF DFW chapter get together at HOTKayaks Grapevine on the 26th of June 4:30PM and do some demos.

I cant throw a cast net on dry land. I used to be able to as a child fishing the coast in Florida but I tried recently and Im terrible at it.

I am 62 years old 5'10" 155 lbs, incredibly average build.
I throw a 5 foot radius 3/8" mesh mono net that I bought at Sports Authority for about 20 bucks. I have caught all kinds of stuff in this net.
I also have a 6 foot net that I bought from Memphis net and twine. This net is much heavier than the 5 footer. I have caught all sorts with this net also.

I use a very simple method to throw:

I can also throw either net from sitting in the kayak and have had some success doing so:

So has this guy.

Heck, I throw a 7 footer standing up from my OK Scrambler. Just be careful that you place your feet to either side and pivot from the waist. It's trickier pulling it back on board than throwing it for me. RBR has a picture or two me in action. Took some nerve to try it the first time, but so far I haven't gone overboard!
