What if I lost my GPS fishing or hunting data/points? I did not buy the additional
software to make custom maps on my computer from my GPS unit or I own a
handheld unit. Here is a suggestion to use a free State of Texas site to create a
backup GPS notebook page like the one I have pictured below.
Web Page: http://134.125.70.235/drillers-new/index.asp
Go to: Well Report Search By Map
At the left Map Tools section: Click on (+) to zoom in
Place the curser over SW corner of Smith Co (Lake Palestine)
Click map 8 times centering on the 155 Hwy & Neches River
Go to: (XY) button to enter GPS lat longs.
( -95 deg is 95 deg west of London England historical observatory
You many need to enter -95 deg in some mapping web sites such as
Topozone.com)
Either click on a spot on the map to create a GPS marker or plot a marker
from your own GPS data point. Enter: Lat 32 12 07 Long 95 28 51
Then click on Add Point To convert 32 12.121 times 0.121 x 60 = 07 sec
[+] Pan button drags the map. List Buffer/Points button adds your points to a list below.
Rest the curser on the horz line at the top of the purple GPS data area or just
above the words: Click on the map to move the purple GPS data area higher.
This purple section lists Lat Lon GPS data as Lon Lat (Deg Min Sec) on the left.
Once you have added a group of points and have moved, zoomed the map, and
listed your GPS lat long data push Print Screen button on your keyboard.
You can paste this on to MS Paint or a WORD.doc and customize your
own GPS notebook page. To convert 32.847690 to Deg Min Sec go to Topozone.com

If anyone has a better Web site let me know.

I use easygps.com for the easiest way to store my gps points. I can store my waypoints in separate files by lake / bay name and they can be separated out by lat. and lon. in the easy gps program to help get them in the correct lake or bay. It also gives the option of which datum you will use, according to the chart you are using. All charts, worth anything, have the map datum on them, ie NAD 27 or WGS 84, which will make a difference of several hundred feet if you input them incorrectly. Marbravo

does your GPS have a data card? I just export the data from my lowrance GPS and dump it on the SD card. Then remove the SD memory card from the GPS and insert into my computer and download the data to my hard disk. Takes about 3 minutes to do the whole process. (not counting walking from the boat to the house)

Pretty cool site though!

I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here!

If you've got an older computer running Window98 or Windows ME you can get a copy of easygps at
Windows 98 EasyGPS

Another really useful free tool is OziExplorer

The new version of EasyGPS will accept the file format Lowrance uses for storing files on the SD card. It's a good way to edit and organize your waypoints, not just back them up.

Unfortunately (for some of us) the Windows 98 version won't accept that file format.

If you are typing coordinates, EasyGPS has an easy interface.

If possible,I would dump to a card and then read them into your computer. You can use program like Babel to convert from your current format to any other format, including excel spreadsheets.
