help me understand what is considered a ledge on the lakes around dfw. i can see ledges in lakes like pk, granbury where there is a cliff or bluff and it makes a ledge under water. but is the edge of a creek channel or river channel considered a ledge because of the steep drop. or is there a golden rule that says it has to run so many feet and drop down so many feet to be considered a ledge. i am trying to get off the bank and fish different structure so this is one of those learning curves i am trying to figure out. so far i have mastered driving to the middle of the lake and sitting there now i just have to figure out what i need to look for. any help would be appriciated

I am still lerarning the deep thing but I think you are being caught up in semantics here. The same thing you see on PK, Granbury etc will apply locally. A ledge is a ledge and the depth drop is secondary. It is important but only really pertinent to that particular lake. Some lakes a 2-4ft drop can be a big deal while others it may take a steeper drop or a lesser drop. Its all relative to that lake.
One thing I am learning is that you can have the prettiest piece of structure in the lake whether its a killer drop or ledge but if it ain't holding fish then you are wasting time. I was guilty of trying to find the best structure I could find but overlooking the importance of the way the fish were relating to it. Sounds silly and simple to say but fish the fish and not just the structure. If they are not holding on it you will just be hauling water.
Maybe someone with a lot more expertise can better answer this though.

yep...a lake worth ledge isn't going to look like a squaw creek ledge...but they both serve the same purpose

+1
Each lake is going to differ I feel. Some lakes that 2- 4 ft drop can be awesome. Say on a lake with average depth of 20-30 feet at it's deepest. But if you end up on a lake that runs much deeper, that 2-4 ft drop is nothing. I look for the drops that are more substantial. If the lake is a relatively deep lake (50-100ft), I look for ledges that go from 15 or so feet to 35+ fast.

Each lake has it's own quirks and the only way to really figure it out is to just find yourself a drop-off/ledge, idle over it a good few times with your electronics and see what it holds. Don't just sit on one spot, but explore the whole ledge/point/drop-off with your electronics. They will sometimes hold to a specific side or area of a structure change, while staying completely clear of the other side.

On the Georgia / Alabama line at Lake Eufaula, fishing the ledges in the summer time is a big thing. This article is a good read, they like to use deep running spinner baits called ledgebusters.
