Well after several cancelled trips this year; we finally got to do an overnighter on the brazos. 5 of us went and did the 10 miler from Rochelles. I've gone on this trip several times during the summer in years past and generally catch 50 or more fish. Betweeen the 5 of us in a day and a half; we caught 9 LMB, one sand bass, and one catfish. Really fishing for bass and caught the other fish by accident. Not sure if we could have done better by strictly catfishing. This trip was pretty disappointing b/c of success in years past. The camping was nice and it's always good to float, but we go for the fishing! I hate to claim Golden Algae b/c that always seems to be the default. Anyway, I won't say "don't go b/c of GA, etc. b/c maybe these were just bad fishing conditions (a lot of people, traffic, etc). Anyway, I had hoped to give you guys a good report and say "go to PK" but unfortunately; I can't say that. Maybe the stretch closer to the dam is producing better. I think I may have to try it again before I give up all together on PK.

It truly is sad. I wont go back there until I start hearing better reports. Every time I went I used to catch lots of large bass. If I caught 5-6 fish in one day it was a bad trip. A good trip used to be 20-25 fish in one day. Last time I went in April at the start of the GA bloom I caught 1 catfish in 3 days. VERY DEPRESSING!

This is what I used to catch out there regularly. Even in freezing temperatures.

4 of us did the 16 to 4 trip a couple of weekends ago ...2 1/2 days and fished it hard. Probably caught 5 bass total and NOTHING to brag about ...it was bad. Only high light was did hook a gar on my flyrod. Best fishing was catfishing around camp with a beer in hand.

As far as Im concerned the BRazos is dead near PK at least until next year. I might try below whitney once they stop releasing so much water.

Sounds like you guys are fishing the wrong areas of the Brazos at the wrong time.

We are catching plenty of fish of multiple species right now. The forage base has exploded with young of the year in certain areas of the river and the fish are gathering up and having a field day just as they do every year around this time.

Although I have to admit. Good water is at a premium right now. wink

You are right about one thing though. Waterway traffic will factor into the bite ratio regardless of when or where you are on the river.

The effects of increased traffic was a lesson hard learned for me last year. Initially, I foolishly passed it off as coincidence or arrogance on my part.

In retrospect, the sobering reality was it almost always coincided with me posting reports with on location photos of me/client trips. hammer

If the same places resulted in catches in years past (4-5 at least) why would those same areas now be considered "wrong"? 10 miles is a lot to cover and not catch much. It's not like we fished a one mile stretch and said "they aren't biting". Apparently, premium water is at a minimum b/c after two trips I haven't found it. The summer time fishing is usually some of the best fishing I can find any where around. Fishing Memorial day weekend was probably a bad idea and did contribute to the #'s, but it still should have been better than 10-12 fish for five guys. Hawkpuppy, I'm assuming you're not a guide so how about posting some good news for the forum members and showing us what you've caught. Maybe some patterns, #'s of fish, species, etc. You can do that w/out posting your location I would assume?

I agree with with Riversmallie because I was there! We have fished that stretch numerous times and have had succes so I would say that it has not been "premium water" in the past. I'm not buying that we didn't or don't know were to fish alng that stretch so anybody who says there still catching fish right now is either stretching it a bit or fishing water that only a selected few have access to through keeping the land owners happy with some sort of treat....

Fishing sucks right now on the Brazos....period.
