I plan on heading out to Calaveras tomorrow mid-morning with a few friends. We've never fished this lake before so not sure what to expect. They'll be bringing a ski boat (they are more into tubing and sking than fishing) but I will be bringing my kayak (fishing is all I'm interested in). I stopped by Academy this evening and picked up some chicken hearts, chicken livers, frozen shrimp, frozen shad, worms and a friend gave me some catfish soap his family makes and sells. I picked up some circle hooks and leaders. I've never caught a hybrid or striper but wouldn't mind catching a Red or cat either..actually catching anything would be fine. Any suggestions? Am I forgeting anything? Thanks in advance for your help! Steve

cast net.its better to catch your own fresh bait. you can troll a rattle trap tillyou reach the spot you want to fish. then you can cast out a live perch or tilapia. try the crappie wall .a friend of mine caught a few reds there yesterday.good luck

Reporting back that I didn't even get to wet a line Monday. The lake was packed with boats and people...especially on the banks. We rode from one end to the other trying to find a place to launch the kayaks or to fish off the banks. Everywhere we went there were poles with lines set out AND people out swimming out among the lines..crazy stuff! After riding around for awhile and not seeing anyone bring even a single fish we decided to wait and try it again when it's not so crowded.

No worries..at least I can say I've been there and I scouted out the lake, both from the bank and the water. Next time I'll make sure to go during the week. Sad part is I didn't see anyone catch anything while I was there. From the reports I read that isn't normally the case?
