Yeah. All you need is some heavy tackle and an iron set of...nevermind.
Let us know if you give it a try!

Contact Earl on TKF. He does some adventurous trips in his yak including several mile trecks into the gulf.

No, I would not take a two man kayak off shore. The safety in numbers is only good if everyone is in their own yak. Also, I highly recommend you go with someone who's done it before.
These trips are well planned and not spur of the moment. You need to seriously watch the winds before heading out.
The nearest rigs along the Port Aransas coast are about 3.5-4 miles out. Make sure you're extremely comfortable in your kayak before going. You'll be in your yak for over 8 hours without being able to stand up and stretch your legs. Wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, wide brim hat, a buff and plenty of sunscreen. Bring lots of fluids and snacks to munch on. Remember, you're paddling constantly the entire time you're out there.
We didn't use anything too heavy gear wise. 20 lbs mono on 4000 series spinning reels on med to med/hvy rods. Your kayak is essentially your drag system with kings. We mainly trolled storm swimbaits. Also bring a few sabiki rigs to catch live bait if arties aren't working. We also packed some dead squid for bottom fishing.
Having said that, it is fun. You get some strange looks from the guys in their triple 300 center consoles while trolling the same rig in your kayak.

I'm gonna try to do something like that for the first time this summer. Not sure how far out I'll go, tho. Prob just around a couple of miles for the first time. Like JeffW said - I suggest you research the BTB posts on www.texaskayakfisherman.com and make sure you're as prepared as possible for anything that could happen out there! And go out with an experienced crowd when you finally do it! Good luck!!!

A far less adventurous (risky) alternative is to launch on the beach but only go out past the breakers and fish the trough past the third sand bar for speckled trout, spanish, bluefish, etc. If I ever bring my kayak to the coast that is what I will do before I contemplate a two-hour paddle out into the Gulf.

Ive btb a couple of times. Its fun. Definitely go with someone. And yes an experienced person is your safe bet to having fun and being safe. Also make sure you have the right yak for it. No one wants to turtle 400yards or a couple of miles out. Worst yet... sink. Above all else take the proper things to be safe. It gets rough out there sometimes.

Thanks, good to hear! wer would be the best place to launch from? we launch from another boat...just not worth it to me to chance it like that. Bad things happen in the ocean and FAST. Storms and wind can kick up in a hurry, I don't care how good a meteorologist you think you are.
Fat is not a handicap, its your punishment for lack of self control.
