Is this a Bullhead? If so, can they be used for cut bait? These little warthogs cause me no end of grief when carp fishing and I was thinking of using them for flathead bait...

Hard to tell by the angle of the photo, but it looks like a channel cat to me. Is the tail forked or rounded?

Not a channel. Tail is rounded. Thick slime coat and quite venomous spines! Ouch!

yeah that's a bullhead ... they make great live bait, which yellas prefer ... for cut bait carp/buff or perch are much better
regards albertking catfishing is now an industry ... it's best for the industry to eat baby catfish

There still not bad tasting fish. Bleed them out, then clean them. Put some yellow mustard on them, then your spices. Cornmeal them rascals, deep fry 'em and yum-yum.

If they come out of good clean water, they taste just fine. Meat seems to be not quite as firm as a channel or blue, but still tasty. Make sure you trim all the gray, brown, and red meat off of 'em though.
No fish is too good for the grease.

they make good yella cat bait. i usually hook them through the mouth where it looks like they bit the hook, others hook them in the tail. it is best to keep them alive. some peopel cut the side fins off of them, i leave the fins intact because it leaves the fish to easier to swim, if you want it to bleed a bit, just lightly slice the skin and let it bleed that way. They can be very annoying, but they are great to take kids out to catch because they bite almost anything with a smell and fight fairly well for a fish that i have not seen bigger than 3-5 pounds. I was always told not to eat them because they have alot of small bones, sort of like a carp, never filleted one to see if it was true.
