Yesteday while fishing at Tawakoni I hooked into about a
3-4lbs channel cat. While reeling it up the catish decided to dive and my 3 month old rod snapped like a dry twig.

The rod was purchased at Bass Pro Shops in Garland and is a Bass Pro Shops Rick Clunn Signature Series XPS Trigger Rod. 6'6 inches Heavy action with recommened line weight of 12-25lbs. I loved this rod and had the drag set below the breaking strength of the 12lb line recommended by the sales person at Bass Pro Shops.

I looked on-line today and found that it has been discontinued so my question is this.

Did I do something wrong or was there a defect in the rod? Has anyone heard anything about these rods that would suggest I should go and try to get Bass pro to replace this rod or just let it go and live and learn?

Thanks in advance.

I would call them or if you are close enough take it up there and be polite. They will take care of you. treat them the way you want to be treated.

Just an update. Last Saturday I happened to be near BPS and decided to swing on in and ask about my broken rod. The lady behind the service desk was real helpful and told be that BPS signature series rods had a one year warrenty and that I could bring it in and exchange it.

When I told her I didn't have the receipt she printed me a new one. I will say that that having a new receipt printed was a new experience for me as anytime in the past other stores have said its not possible to print a new receipt.

I am headed there in a few minutes with the broken rod and receipt in hand and hopefully I will be the owner of a brand new rod by lunch time.

If everything goes alright, my already high opinion of BPS will grow even higher.

Sounds like BPS is taking care of you. Glad to hear they are replacing the rod.

Another update.

I went into BPS and straight to the customer service counter. When I explained my story, the gentleman behind the counter gave me some paperwork and sent me to the rod & reel counter. The man at the rod & reel counter was very helpful and gave me several options.

The rod combo I bought was last years model and they no longer carried it. He could set me up with this years model but I would have to pay the $40 difference. I could get any rod and reel they sale and pay any difference there might be, if any.

I asked him what he would suggest and he asked me if I could wait until Monday. When I asked why he told me there was going to be a sale and he knew for a fact that there was a combo that was better than what I had that normally was $100 more was going to be reduced and that my exchange would cover it completely. So it would be like buying a better rod and reel. He showed me the rod and it was a 7 ft heavy action rod which was 6" lager than the one I was returning. The reel was a 7 bearing pro qualifier.

I opted for the store credit and told him I would return Monday. When I returned to the service desk and told the guy what our decision was he gave me a store card and as icing on the cake gave me a few dollars more than what I paid for the rod & reel in the first place.

I really have to hand it to BPS. They really took care of me and did not give me any grief or problems. I will be doing a lot of business with them in the future.
