I have a little X 52 in the cosole that started showing the bottom weaker and weaker. Yesterday I had to put the sesitivity to 98% just to get a good bottom return. At depths more than 25 ft it shows almost nothing. Is the unit going bad or the transducer?

Could be either one. Do you know anyone else running a blue xducer? Easiest thing would be to put your head unit on their boat and if it works you have a bad xducer.
