Hey guys and gals, my merc seems to not lock into forward gear immediately when i put her in gear. I'll put it in forward and it will go forward but it will " CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK " and then it will lock in and i can go like a scalded dog. Wondering if any of you experts can clue me in on what is happening and what it might cost to fix it. Just looking for some info to go by before i start throwing money at it. thanks, Johnny

Sounds like worn dog clutch.

Quit easing the shift lever into forward. You want a rapid "Clunk" when you shift from neutral to forward. If you easy into gear the clutch is jumping in and out of the forward gear and you run the risk of chipping the clutch or chipping the forward gear. Either way will cost $$$$$$$$.

that easing into gear causes the racheting which rounds off the clutch dog lugs
