I was fishing the intercoastal waterway, down by the levee in surfside a few weeks ago. I was throwing a large spoon out, and on the first cast, I hooked something big. In a matter of seconds, it took every bit of line off my rod, I didn't have a chance. What could it have been?

drag ?
Big redfish can make some pretty long runs, but if I were
betting , I would say jack.

I can only imagine the mindset... First cast of the day and ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE you are standing there with a rod with no line on it thinking WTH just happened?!?!

right now there's a ton of huge macks out in surfside and that would be a good guess, or a king fish.

could have been a king or a jack. It's happend before. Now I take gear out there that'll man handle a 50" king or 15lb jack. those JC's are pound for pound some of the best fighting fish we have here in the GOM.

Thanks for the help guys, I was really curious. That was so crazy, my first cast and then ZEEEEEEE there goes my line. Didn't have a chance. I guess I need to be better prepared next time!

That happened to me first cast the first time I was in the Bahama's. Penn 320 with 35lb test all gone in 5-8 seconds. It is really cool staring at your friends as your real just empties as you think ok it will stop.....The best part were the guys with me who wanted to know why I brought that giant rod....
